Munich Airport Launches Interactive Tablet-Equipped Baggage Trolleys
Passengers at Munich Airport can enjoy the advantage of a more technologically advanced pre-departure experience. Passengers may manually enter their flight information or scan their boarding passes into a tablet mounted on their carry-on luggage trolley. Munich Airport Smart Trolleys
Their flight information and any relevant updates will be sent to them instantly. Passengers have choices outside their departure gate, such as shopping and dining. They are then given location-based offers as they make their way across the terminal using a map that serves as a directory. There is no fee for using the smart baggage trolleys. After going through security and before reaching duty-free, you may hire one at Terminal 2.
Their installation is part of a test programme running in Terminal 2 for the next six months. Intelligent Track Systems (ITS), a Danish software company, is working with us on this testing phase. ITS’s interactive screens have been retrofitted onto preexisting carry-on luggage trolleys at Munich Airport. The ITS “click-on” solution has not been seen anywhere else in the world until now.
“Digitalisation doesn’t always have to happen in the background,” Dr. Jan-Henrik Andersson, Chief Commercial Officer of Munich Airport, said. These tablets allow our guests to navigate the airport and stay updated on their flight status. This endeavour is a continuation of our state-of-the-art innovation hub. Our customers will benefit significantly from the integration of digital and analogue technologies.
ITS CEO Morten Pankoke: “Our tablets can direct users to specific stores and highlight retail activations and activities. Passengers often overlook these when they are in a rush or stressed. But if they can see the deals on the tablet and the time they have to get to the gate using way-finding, they are more likely to check out some store offers if they have the time.”
Munich Airport and Dabico agree to develop autonomous passenger boarding bridges Munich Airport Smart Trolleys
On the occasion of inter airport Europe 2023 in Munich, Munich Airport, together with its Terminal 2 subsidiary and Dabico Airport Solutions Germany GmbH, signed a letter of intent (LOI) to develop an innovative concept for fully automated passenger boarding bridges.
With the LOI, the two companies announced that they will determine the requirements for autonomous operation of the passenger boarding bridges and will use the results to jointly develop a pilot system for Munich Airport.
“With this pioneering project, we aim to reduce the duration of docking and undocking operations for passenger boarding bridges, thereby increasing the operational reliability and efficiency of our handling processes,” says Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport.
“The long-standing cooperation with Munich Airport, as well as the acquisition of the passenger boarding bridge manufacturer FMT in January, lay the foundation for the Dabico Group to continue developing innovative integrated systems,” affirms Alexander Pfurr, Managing Director and CCO of Dabico Airport Solutions Germany GmbH.
The development of the autonomous passenger boarding bridges is part of a digitalization strategy at Munich Airport that encompasses operational, commercial and, above all, passenger-friendly processes and technologies.
Among the many measures already in place are biometric boarding pass checks, biometric access to gates and lounges, so-called “smart trolleys” for navigation, flight information and shopping offers, chatbots for passenger inquiries, self-checkout kiosks, self-order terminals in restaurants, sensor technology for calculating waiting times at security checkpoints, and robotic projects for ground handling services as well as the use of robots for cleaning in Terminal 2 and the satellite.
