Dutch World Cup start results in 50% more data traffic on mobile network
The Netherlands’ opening match during the World Cup football was watched a lot on Monday via smartphones. At around 5 p.m. at the start of Senegal – the Netherlands, KPN recorded approximately 50% more data traffic on the mobile 4G and 5G networks. Many Orange fans were probably still on their way home at that time and watched the start of the match via the iTV app or a live stream, only to see the Dutch team score in the 84th minute at home with family or friends. world cup data traffic
During the race, the amount of data traffic decreased again, but it was still about 30% more than during a normal day. KPN also saw a clear decrease in the number of telephone calls. KPN processed considerably fewer telephone calls between 5 and 7 pm than on a ‘normal’ day.
KPN almost always sees major sporting events such as the Orange matches and F1 races on its network. KPN is well prepared for this and sees the trend of more and more people watching football matches away from home via telephone or tablet continuing. KPN also recorded more data traffic on its mobile network during the European Football Championship last summer, with approximately 30% more data traffic during the Netherlands-Austria match on June 17, 2021.
According to Stichting KijkOnderzoek, almost 4.3 million people watched the first match of Orange at the World Cup on Monday evening via TV. Compared to previous matches of the Dutch national team during a World Cup or European Championship, this was one of the least watched first matches of an opening tournament.
