China is by far the world’s largest market.
Newest research from Strategy Analytics Smartphone Model Tracker (SMT) shows Apple iPhone 12 5G became the no.1 bestselling smartphone model in China in Q2 2021.
OPPO, Vivo and Xiaomi also have numerous Android models close behind and they are chasing hard.
As of the end of the first quarter of 2021, Apple dominated the 5G smartphone market in China too with almost 5 percent of 5G smartphone users owning iPhone 12. The second most popular 5G smartphone model was the Huawei Nova7, Statista reported.
“In China now, 5G is not a premium feature, it’s a must-have feature,” said Nicole Peng, who tracks China’s smartphone sector at Canalys. Peng said the 5G launch will “trigger a new wave of phone replacements” for Apple in China before the end of the year and in first-quarter 2021.
Canalys expects 50% of Chinese phone owners to be using a 5G device by the end of 2020, as networks and phone brands have aggressively pushed adoption. Only 29% of US phone owners will be on 5G devices by the same time.
It is interesting to mention that Apple is tapping more suppliers in China for key roles in producing the upcoming iPhone 13 series, a sign that the country’s technological competitiveness is continuing to increase despite Washington’s attempts to rein in Beijing’s tech ambitions.
Eric Tseng, chief analyst with Isaiah Research, said companies like Luxshare, Goertek, Wingtech and Lens have all been gaining orders in the Apple supply chain recently. The rise of Luxshare — which started out providing relatively simple components for iPhones just a few years ago — is likely to be a bargaining chip for Apple against its longtime manufacturing partner Foxconn, he added.
