Belgian operators to keep free roaming in UK
Telecom operators are not allowed to charge extra costs to customers who text, call or surf in another EU country. But the British will leave the Union on January 1 and then those EU regulations will expire immediately. This has also been confirmed in the trade agreement that was agreed between the EU and Great Britain, Bloomberg reports.
But initially, Belgians who travel to the country would not immediately change their telecom bill. “Proximus has previously decided not to charge roaming charges for trips to the UK,” said the spokesman. At Orange it sounds that for its customers “the United Kingdom will remain in Europe. No extra costs, roam like at home”.
And Telenet also confirms that nothing will change after Brexit. The British operators let Bloomberg understand that, conversely, they will not charge any roaming costs for Britons traveling to the European Union. It is not clear how long this measure will last.
The number of trips by Belgian residents to the UK decreased from 1.16 million in 2013 to 1.12 million in 2014. In 2019 the number of similar trips amounted to around 1.13 million.
