Easyjet to cut free hand luggage allowance in February

Britain’s largest budget airline is halving its hand baggage allowance for passengers paying cheaper fares. From February 10, 2021, most easyJet passengers will be limited to a small bag that fits under the front seat. EasyJet cabin bag allowance

The airline says, “This will allow them to bring everything they need for their trip or enough for a short trip. ”

The move follows Ryanair’s hand baggage size reduction, but it is even more drastic – as there is no option for a regular passenger to pay extra to bring a larger bag into the cabin.

As is currently the case on easyJet flights, travelers paying extra for a ‘front’ seat or more legroom will be able to bring a larger bag in addition to the smaller one. Passengers holding an easyJet Plus card or paying a higher ‘flexi’ fare will also be allowed two pieces of luggage.

For everyone else, the new easyJet carry-on baggage limit is 45x36x20cm, a volume of 32.4 liters – barely half the current limit of 63 liters, with a 56x45x25cm bag.

The rule applies to all new reservations. On a one-way flight from Manchester to Faro on April 1, the standard fare is £ 62. The minimum supplement for two cabin bags is £ 21 which increases the cost by a third.

The airline portrays the move as a benefit for passengers, saying: “Limited overhead locker space on planes means customers can’t always be sure they have their hand luggage on board.

“The new policy will also reduce boarding wait times and other associated delays that occur due to the hold of excess carry-on baggage and therefore the move will result in improved on-time performance for all the clients.”

There are between 42 and 63 seats up front and more legroom on every easyJet flight. All seats that allow additional baggage to be brought in are at the front of the aircraft, and it is not clear how the top locker space will be allocated.

Passengers who have already booked travel from February 10 will be offered the option of checking in one piece of baggage in the existing hand baggage dimensions free of charge.

Ryanair has a limit of 40x25x20cm, with a volume of 20 liters. It offers “priority plus two cabin bags” at an additional cost.

EasyJet has entered into partnerships with two Covid testing firms to offer customers booking flights and holidays discounted tests. From later this week clients will be given a unique code to book tests with Confirm Testing and City Doc.

Home test kits cost £75 with Confirm Testing, down from £119, while in clinic tests with CityDoc are reduced from £200 to £150 with the code. CityDoc also offers home test kits to easyJet customers for £100.
TUI is also discounting home kits, which cost £84 when booked using a discount code on the TUI website, but this is available to all holidaymakers, not just TUI customers.
Wizz also has a discount code for Confirm Testing kits on its website, which reduces the cost to £84.
And Club Med has also announced today that it will offer clients discounted tests with Randox, bringing the cost down to £95.
EasyJet CEO Johan Lundgren said: “I’m really pleased to be able to offer our customers convenient testing options at cheaper rates than are widely available on the market.
“This, coupled with the news that quarantine can be reduced with a negative test, is a key step towards travel getting back to normal.”
The discounts are for PCR tests but Johan said the airline was continuing to push for testing the efficacy of the cheaper, faster antigen and LAMP tests, which could be taken at airports on departure. EasyJet cabin bag allowance
Several airports including Gatwick, Edinburgh and Newcastle have introduced drive-through test centres with subsidised rates starting from £60 for passengers, but capacity is severely limited.
