Samsung leads in 5G smartphones in North America

Samsung shipped 58.3 million smartphones worldwide in Q1 2020, down by -19% YoY. Though Covid-19 severely impacted this vendor’s performance during the quarter, Samsung delivered a record high smartphone ASP thanks to the healthy demand of 5G and foldable smartphones. In global 5G smartphone race, Samsung took the first place this quarter.
The USA is the major consumer of 5G smartphones in the region, accounting for nearly all 5G smartphones shipped to the region.
Apple will not begin shipping 5G smartphones until Q4 2020, but when it does it will have a major impact on the 5G market in North America.
As coverage expands across the US, and with Canada expecting to deploy 5G in 2020, 5G adoption is expected to rapidly gather pace in North America. By the end of 2022, 24% of connections on the continent will be on 5G networks, rising to 46% by 2025 – equivalent to 200 million 5G connections, GSMA revealed.
