Indeed, Strategy Analytics finds that the power consumption beast can be tamed by a range of complementary technologies. A key enabler is wireless charging and the rapid adoption of the Qi standard in smartphones, which continue to represent the bulk of Qi RX-enabled devices worldwide.

What is Qi?

Wireless charging is a technology that allows charging over very short distances without cables.

The advantage of wireless charging is that it’s quicker and easier, as you don’t have to plug and unplug each time – you just place your device on top of your wireless charging pad. It also looks neater.

Strategy Analytics’ latest research finds that 22% of global smartphone shipments in 2019 supported Qi RX, a percentage we forecast will double to 44% by 2024. Across all phones and accessories, over 303 million RX devices shipped in 2018, registering a positive growth of 11% year over year in 2019 to reach 336 million units, amid an overall smartphone market in decline. On the TX side, Qi volumes grew from 81 million units in 2018 to 127 million in 2019, up an impressive 57% year over year.

Samsung and others lead the way. Consumers like the ease and convenience of wire-free battery charging.
