Verizon Safe WiFi launched for Android, iOS at $3.99/month

The service, which Verizon calls Safe Wi-Fi, is presented as a way to block advertisement trackers and protect one’s privacy without having to sign up with a third-party VPN company. The subscription is only available for certain Verizon customers, though. verizon wifi plans

Customers must be signed up for either The Verizon Plan, the new Verizon Plan, one of the MORE Everything plans, mobile broadband plans, international plans, or nationwide plans. The only exception is the 250MB MORE Everything plan; as well, business accounts with ECPD profiles, corporate accounts, devices with enabled Push to Talk, non-nationwide plans, and prepaid accounts aren’t eligible to use Safe Wi-Fi.

The monthly price is $3.99 and will cover up to 10 devices on their account.

A VPN protects the user’s data and keeps their web browsing activity private while on a private or open WiFi network, such as one they may connect to at the library or local coffee shop. Verizon offers the service via an app that supports iOS 10 and newer, as well as Android 4.4.1 or higher.

It will also block and hide your IP to help cover your tracks and not give out your private information. To top it off, Verizon’s VPN will also provide users with ad-blocking which is also another way of protecting your online presence as some ads do come with trackers that track your activity across the internet.

Verizon Safe Wi-Fi has several competitors offering similar VPN and online security services for mobile users. Here’s a look at some popular alternatives:

  1. AT&T Mobile Security & Call Protect:
    • AT&T offers a VPN-based mobile security solution as part of its Mobile Security app. The app provides network protection, safe browsing, and identity monitoring. The premium version includes enhanced features like identity theft alerts and secure Wi-Fi VPN protection.
  2. T-Mobile Scam Shield & McAfee Security:
    • T-Mobile offers Scam Shield, focused on call and text filtering, but partners with McAfee to provide VPN and cybersecurity options. The McAfee Security app includes VPN protection, identity monitoring, and antivirus features. It’s available to T-Mobile customers as part of their device protection packages.
  3. Xfinity Mobile Secure WiFi:
    • Xfinity provides a Secure WiFi feature that encrypts data on public Wi-Fi networks. The service is part of Xfinity’s mobile protection plans and offers similar features, like secure browsing and VPN encryption for users of public hotspots.
  4. Google One VPN:
    • Available to Google One subscribers on select plans, Google’s VPN offers secure browsing on Android and iOS, providing encryption on public networks and device-level security. Google One VPN is included with 2 TB or higher plans, so users can enjoy additional storage alongside enhanced online privacy.
  5. Standalone VPN Providers (e.g., NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark):
    • These VPNs offer comprehensive, cross-platform solutions for secure browsing, privacy protection, and ad-blocking. They are known for strong encryption, multiple server locations, and features like kill switches and multi-device support.

Each of these services offers unique features, but most aim to provide secure internet access, especially on public Wi-Fi, through VPN encryption and other online privacy measures. Verizon Safe Wi-Fi’s competitive edge lies in its low monthly price and convenient integration within Verizon’s ecosystem.
