VoLTE (Voice over LTE) roaming refers to the ability of a mobile network subscriber to use VoLTE services when they are roaming outside their home network’s coverage area. VoLTE allows voice calls to be made over the LTE (Long-Term Evolution) data network instead of using traditional circuit-switched voice networks.

With VoLTE, customers can simultaneously use voice and data over LTE. Calls are routed over faster LTE networks instead of HSPA, resulting in better and clearer calls, which connect more quickly.

The changes came into effect, on October 17, 2018. Telus has updated both its website and Koodo’s LTE pages to reflect the changes.

As of October 17, 2018, customers with a VoLTE enabled phone will be able to place and receive calls over the LTE network instead of the HSPA network while roaming in the U.S. Telus and Koodo roaming on VOLTE

If there is no VoLTE coverage, or if customers don’t have a VoLTE enabled device, customers will continue roaming on the 4G (HSPA) network. VoLTE roaming rates will be the same as current HSPA roaming rates.

Carrier daily roaming plans are $7 per day so it would be wise to get some cheaper solutions.

VoLTE roaming is becoming increasingly common as more mobile network operators around the world deploy VoLTE technology and expand their LTE networks.
