Telenor Hungary’s roaming affected by coronavirus

Telenor Hungary‘s annual data roaming report shows that the coronavirus outbreak caused a major disruption in its roaming growth trend.

Since favourable EU roaming regulations were put in place in 2017, Telenor customers generated a data traffic of more than 5.6 million GBs in roaming zone 1 including the EU. Roaming data usage increased both inside and outside Europe in that period.

At the time of the restrictions associated with the coronavirus, domestic mobile internet traffic increased by an order of magnitude of 30% compared to the pre-virus period, which was also greatly supported by free or discounted mobile internet access for increased demand. At the same time, as a result of the introduction of travel restrictions, the data traffic of domestic mobile users abroad, ie roaming, decreased significantly: in the countries visited seasonally, it almost disappeared, while in countries with balanced roaming traffic throughout the year, Telenor’s report shows a significant decline.
