Tele2 Lithuania offers travel insurance

Mobile operator Tele2 Lithuania is introducing a new product – travel insurance. According to the company, the service stands out for its simple activation, competitive pricing, and broad coverage, making it a natural extension of the operator’s existing connectivity services.

“Once one customer has insurance, the protection applies to all family members, even if they are not Tele2 customers. Due to our large customer base, wide reach, and technological capabilities to link the product with roaming services, we can offer competitive pricing,”

says Lukas Savickas, Insurance Product Manager at Tele2.

The service has been developed in partnership with insurance company BTA and is designed for maximum convenience. Once the contract is signed, the insurance automatically activates every time the customer crosses the border – a seamless process similar to how roaming services are triggered abroad. Other telecom operators across Europe, such as Vodafone with its bundled travel services or Orange with lifestyle-based add-ons, have experimented with linking financial protection to mobile services, but Tele2’s approach focuses on simplicity and inclusivity for the entire family.

A key differentiator is that the first day of travel is always free, ensuring protection even on short trips. Customers retain full flexibility – the service can be cancelled at any time if not needed for a specific journey. This mirrors the growing trend among telecoms to introduce on-demand, cancellable add-ons that align with modern digital lifestyles.

The coverage applies year-round, worldwide – with the exception of Russia, Belarus, Cuba, Iran, and North Korea – and includes benefits typically seen in standalone insurance products. Customers are covered for medical expenses up to €100,000, receive financial protection in case of accidents up to €6,000, reimbursement for lost or stolen documents up to €300, and civil liability protection up to €30,000.

To enhance the service, Tele2 customers also receive two free remote eMED consultations with doctors. This reflects a broader telecom trend of integrating digital health services into connectivity packages, similar to how Swisscom and T-Mobile have added telemedicine partnerships for their users. With quick access to professional advice, travelers can resolve health issues abroad without unnecessary stress or delays.

According to Savickas, the insurance is particularly valuable for those engaging in popular leisure activities:

“Customers can feel secure whether they are skiing, driving motor vehicles, or enjoying other forms of entertainment that travelers often choose.”

A contract can be concluded—or cancelled—in whichever way is most convenient: in-store, through self-service, or by calling the contact center. Once the contract is active, the protection automatically turns on whenever roaming begins. The customer receives an SMS notification, allowing them to manage coverage instantly. For example, if the service is not needed on a specific trip, it can be deactivated at the touch of a button.

This move places Tele2 alongside a growing number of operators who are moving beyond connectivity to offer value-added lifestyle services. Just as Telia has ventured into home security solutions and O2 offers device insurance, Tele2 is broadening its portfolio with a product that combines technology, convenience, and peace of mind—proving that the modern telecom operator is no longer just a service provider but a trusted travel partner.
