The Infrastructure Minister of Slovenia, Alenka Bratusek, and the Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure of Serbia, Goran Vesić, made the announcement during Vesić’s visit to Slovenia.

Reconstruction of Belgrade-Zagreb-Ljubljana Railroad

According to a report by the British Serb Magazine, the initiative involves the reconstruction of the Belgrade-Zagreb-Ljubljana railroad, the introduction of a new train, and the establishment of a night train that connects Ljubljana and Belgrade. Vesić stressed that the distance between Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana, and Belgrade would take “just more than two hours.”

Vesić also revealed that he talked with Matteo Salvini, the Minister of Infrastructure and Transport of Italy, regarding the issue. They agreed to start a joint meeting between Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Serbia, and Croatia, with the participation of the European Commission, to create a joint body that would help to coordinate the work on the railroad reconstruction. The joint body would also prepare the timetable and everything else that ensues once high-speed trains are introduced. Such a decision would be beneficial for all countries, as it would connect people and allow goods to move more quickly. Additionally, there is an established and functioning goods terminal between Slovenia and Serbia.

Investment in Rail Infrastructure

The Minister of Infrastructure of Slovenia, Alenka Bratusek, stressed that the country’s budget for this year includes more than 420 million euros for railway reconstruction in Slovenia. Slovenia has nearly 1,200 kilometers of rail, and it plans to restore a large part of the railway infrastructure in the future. The most significant project currently underway is the Divaca-Kopar railway, which will enable the Port of Kopar to become as competitive as possible. Goods from the Port of Kopar will also be eligible to go to Serbia more quickly.
