This collaboration ushers in a new era of exploration, seamlessly blending augmented reality (AR) experiences directly into Google Maps for the first time ever.

A Trailblazing Partnership for Unforgettable Discoveries

This isn’t just another press release; it’s a herald of a revolutionary shift in how we experience travel. By joining forces, Google and STB are placing Singapore at the forefront of AR-driven tourism. As one of only two pilot programs globally, this initiative promises to transform how visitors delve into the Lion City’s captivating tapestry of cultures, cuisines, and historical gems.

Building on Success: The Legacy of Merli’s Immersive Adventure

The seeds of this innovative project were sown with the triumphant launch of Merli’s Immersive Adventure earlier this year. This enthralling AR tour, accessible via the STB’s Visit Singapore Travel Guide app, whisked visitors on a magical journey through six captivating locations across Singapore. Powered by Google’s ARCore and Geospatial Creator, the tour epitomized the potential of AR to elevate the travel experience.

Embark on an Immersive Odyssey: 30 Landmarks Beckon

Get ready to be swept away by a captivating tapestry of 30 iconic landmarks across Singapore, each meticulously brought to life with the magic of AR. This pilot program transcends the boundaries of a single app, making these captivating AR experiences discoverable directly within the Google Maps mobile app. Imagine strolling down Orchard Road, a haven for retail therapy, and witnessing its stores come alive with AR. Or, delve into the rich heritage of Chinatown, where AR overlays can illuminate the area’s captivating history.

A Feast for the Senses: Unveiling Singapore’s Culinary Delights

The AR experiences extend beyond historical and architectural marvels, encompassing the very essence of Singapore’s vibrant culture – its food! Envision yourself standing outside the Maxwell Food Centre, a paradise for local delicacies, and utilizing AR to explore the culinary delights awaiting you within.

Beyond Borders: Accessible AR Experiences for Seamless Exploration

This initiative extends far beyond the confines of physical location. The AR content will also be visible remotely via Street View on the Google Maps mobile app. This ensures a seamless and accessible experience, allowing you to whet your travel appetite for Singapore from anywhere in the world.

A Glimpse into the Future: The Dawn of the AR City

This collaboration marks a significant step towards realizing STB’s ambitious vision of establishing Singapore as the world’s first “AR City” within Google Maps. With over 30 landmarks boasting captivating AR experiences, visitors can embark on a truly immersive journey, enriching their understanding of Singapore’s cultural tapestry.

With this expansion, the AR content will now be visible remotely via Street View on the Google Maps mobile app for a seamless and accessible experience regardless of location. Users near the landmarks can also discover the AR content on their mobile devices by scanning their surroundings using Lens in Maps, as it overlays the physical surroundings in the real world. This will be helpful for visitors planning their trips to Singapore, and navigating the island through AR tours when they are in the country.

The full experience will be available on Google Maps later this summer. STB plans to further grow the number of location-based AR experiences in Google Maps beyond 30, building on its goal of making Singapore the world’s first “AR City” in Google Maps.

Eric Lai, Group Product Manager, AR said, “In collaboration with local partners like STB, we’re thrilled to unlock a new way for people to interact, engage, and discover Singapore’s vibrant culture and history on Google Maps. Through location-based AR experiences, we’re making it more intuitive for over a billion users to discover this iconic city in a way like never before. This is just the beginning of a journey that will reshape how we explore the world.”

Simon Ang, Director, of The Collaboratory, Singapore Tourism Board, said: “We are excited to extend our partnership with Google to bring even more immersive and innovative experiences to travelers through AR on Google Maps. This partnership underscores STB’s dedication to testing the use of frontier technologies that can revolutionize the visitor’s experience of tomorrow. This pilot greatly benefits local businesses, which can leverage AR to tell different stories over the same spaces and have their content discoverable and accessible on Google Maps. It also benefits travellers as it aids their discovery of new places of interest, and enriches them with a deeper understanding of Singapore’s rich history and culture through interactive storytelling. STB is committed to embracing technology to enhance the visitor experience and differentiate Singapore from other destinations.”

Conclusion: Unveiling a World of Wonder

The Google and Singapore Tourism Board partnership signifies a monumental leap forward in the realm of travel exploration. By weaving the magic of AR directly into the fabric of Google Maps, this initiative promises to transform Singapore into a living, breathing destination. Get ready to unlock a treasure trove of captivating experiences, where history, culture, and cuisine come alive at your fingertips.
