Simyo introduces support for eSims
Simyo will support e-sims with iPhones from 2018 and 2019, the provider announces. The support for Android follows ‘not much later this year’, according to the provider. In the My Simyo app, customers can exchange their physical SIM card for an eSIM. In addition, new subscribers can immediately receive an e-sim.
That not only applies to subscribers, but also to prepaid customers, says the KPN subsidiary. Simyo is the first provider in the Netherlands that gives prepaid customers the opportunity to use an e-sim.
The most used phones with eSIM are iPhones, but there have also been Android phones with e-sim support for some time. More may follow soon. Manufacturers often use a combination of a slot for one or more physical sim cards with a chip for an e-sim on the pcb. This allows telephone users to choose between the use of a physical SIM card or eSIM. T-Mobile was the first major provider in the Netherlands to support e-sims in the summer of last year. Truphone had had that support for much longer and Voiceworks already offered it ‘white label’. Simyo eSims
KPN “is closely following the introduction of e-sim at Simyo,” the company said. The parent company now only supports e-sims for iot devices, but consumers cannot get e-sims from KPN for their smartphones.
In Belgium, Orange and Proximus have promised support for eSIM. In the Netherlands, T-Mobile did that before. KPN already supports the eSIM for Internet of Things devices.
