Siminn announces arrival of eSIMs in Iceland
Finally, an eSIM or electronic SIM card, is available in Iceland, for the first time. eSIM is built into a number of smartphones, but then there is no need to use a traditional SIM card, you simply pair the electronic card that is built into the smartphone with the subscription in the cloud.
Siminn will begin providing eSIM support for Samsung smart watches shortly, and later in the year for Apple watches. Customers will then be able to travel without their phones but still receive calls, and text messages, and listen to Spotify or podcasts.
Many phones also support both standard SIM cards and electronic SIM cards, so you can use two numbers in one device, for example, one from your employer and the other for personal use. You can get an electronic eSIM in SÃminn‘s nearest store.
Iceland has one of the smallest yet most progressive telecom markets in Europe. There is effective competition in the mobile and broadband markets, with a number of players having emerged to challenge the dominance of the two leading players the two main players SÃminn and Sýn, which have interests in numerous sectors. Sýn was formerly Vodafone Iceland, which was rebranded to reflect the company’s move into broadband and broadcasting following its December 2017 acquisition of most of the telecoms and media interests of 365 Media.
eSIM is the latest generation of SIM cards that have been plastic cards installed in telephones since the beginning of the mobile network. Thus, eSIM is not only a more environmentally friendly option but also a much more convenient option for consumers as it is not possible to lose an electronic SIM card.
The new entrant Nova has become the leading player in the mobile market and has quickly expanded its presence in the fixed-line segment. siminn eSIM
