Saudi Arabia Record Highest Int’l Tourism Growth among G20 Countries in First 7 Months of 2024
Saudi Arabia has once again registered the highest growth in international tourism figures in the first seven months of this year among the G20 countries, according to the latest data from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO).
Record-Breaking Increase in Tourist Numbers
Compared to the same period in 2019, the Kingdom recorded a remarkable 73% increase in the number of international tourists and a 207% growth in international tourism revenues, the organization’s September 2024 World Tourism Barometer report showed.
With 17.5 million international tourists arriving during this period, the Kingdom has significantly strengthened its global tourism appeal. In 2023, Saudi Arabia welcomed 27.4 million visitors, representing a 56% growth compared to 2019 figures.
Surpassing Expectations with Economic Gains
This surge in visitors positioned Saudi Arabia at the top of the UNWTO’s list for tourism growth among major destinations in 2023. Additionally, the country recorded a travel item surplus of SAR48 billion, a historic figure reflecting a 38% year-on-year increase.
Saudi Arabia’s tourism sector has gained global recognition, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) praising its achievements in its 2024 Article IV Consultation report. The report commended the sector for its role in driving economic diversification as part of the ambitious Saudi Vision 2030 plan.
Tourism as a Pillar of Vision 2030
A central pillar of the Vision 2030 initiative, tourism is pivotal in reducing the Kingdom’s reliance on oil revenues. By focusing on expanding cultural, religious, and leisure tourism offerings, Saudi Arabia has attracted visitors with diverse attractions like the UNESCO World Heritage Site of AlUla, the Red Sea coast, and its rich cultural history.
Growing Economic Impact of Tourism
The tourism sector’s performance has been a key driver of economic growth, contributing to job creation, increased spending, and a larger share of the Kingdom’s GDP. These accomplishments underline Saudi Arabia’s rise as a premier global tourism destination, with the continual increase in tourist arrivals reflecting the success of its evolving, diverse, and attractive tourism landscape.
