You and your smartphone can contribute to gathering scientific data

The application was launched recently and follows a logic of citizen contribution, in a crowdsource model, bringing together multiple data sources to contribute to a more complete analysis, inspired by the famous SETI@home initiative. It already has more than 10 thousand participants, who are mainly in central Europe. satellites and smartphones

The idea is that you can leave your smartphone, with the CAMALIOT app already installed, at your home window, turning on satellite positioning (GPS) and tuning in to the slight variations of satellite signals. The instructions are easy to follow and are well explained on the initiative’s website.

CAMALIOT was developed by ESA’s NAVISP (Navigation Innovation and Support Programme) program with GNSS support center connection, and is suitable for more than 50 smartphone models that are on the market, already equipped with satellite receivers.

ESA is promoting a “citizen science” campaign, and participants can win prizes, as well as help to create new weather projection models that use data from the global navigation system, such as Galileo satellites, which currently measure different environmental parameters.

The combination of information from satellites and smartphones using the applications extends the coverage and density of signal detection, and the results are then analyzed in a big data model that can identify new patterns on land and in space. The information is collected regularly and on the map, you can see how many measurements have been made in the different parts of Europe.

The CAMALIOT app can be downloaded for free from the Google Play store. satellites and smartphones
