Ooredoo Myanmar rebrand U9

Ooredoo Myanmar to Become U9 on September 20, 2025

Myanmar’s telecom sector has undergone rapid transformation over the past decade. Once one of the world’s most closed and underdeveloped mobile markets, it opened to international players in 2014 when Ooredoo and Telenor were granted operating licenses. This broke the long-standing dominance of state-owned MPT and dramatically lowered the cost of SIM cards, bringing mobile connectivity to millions of people for the first time.

Since then, Myanmar has become one of Asia’s most dynamic telecom markets, with mobile penetration surpassing 100% and data consumption growing at double-digit rates each year. Today, four main operators compete for nearly 60 million mobile users:

  • MPT (Myanma Posts and Telecommunications)—the long-established market leader.
  • Mytel—a joint venture with military ownership, backed by Viettel from Vietnam.
  • Atom—formerly Telenor Myanmar, now owned by Lebanese investment firm M1 Group.
  • Ooredoo Myanmar—which entered with Qatari backing and, in 2023, was acquired by Nine Communications, a Singapore-based consortium.

Against this backdrop of intense competition and shifting ownership, Ooredoo Myanmar’s upcoming rebrand to U9 represents not just a new name but a repositioning for the future.

Seamless Transition for Customers

On 20 September 2025, Ooredoo Myanmar will officially become U9. The new identity will be visible across retail stores, service centres, and digital platforms in the weeks following the launch.

For customers, the transition will be seamless:

  • Mobile numbers and SIM cards remain unchanged.
  • All existing plans, balances, and subscriptions continue as normal.
  • Customer care hotlines and store locations stay the same.
  • No action is required to maintain services.

U9 represents a new chapter in Myanmar’s telecommunications and digital sector.

What U9 Stands For

  • “U” = “You”: customers, partners, and communities at the centre of everything.
  • “9” = progress and continuity: building on Ooredoo’s legacy while moving forward with fresh energy.

Digital Transition

On launch day, customers will be able to download the U9 mobile app from the Apple App Store and Google Play. Existing Ooredoo Myanmar app users can log in with their current credentials without disruption.

Background

Ooredoo Myanmar entered the market in 2014 as one of the first foreign telecom operators to compete with state-backed incumbents. In 2023, it was acquired by Nine Communications, a Singapore-based consortium. The transition to U9 aligns with this ownership change and positions the company to compete more aggressively in Myanmar’s fast-evolving mobile market against rivals MPT, Mytel, and Atom.
