Germans made intensive use of this year’s summer vacation to travel and take a break away from home. Always with you as a loyal companion: the smartphone. In the summer months, peaks of around 100 Gbit/s flowed over O 2 ‘s roaming data highway. These so-called IP Exchange networks (IPX networks) transport the mobile phone signals of all customers abroad to the O 2 network and back again. The European Championship soccer final delivered the absolute roaming peak value: When the German women’s national soccer team played against England for the European Championship title in London on July 31, 2022, customers of O 2Telefónica data traffic of around 120 Gbit/s abroad.

Summer holidays are roaming high season: The roaming leader among O 2 customers is the holiday country Spain, followed by Italy and the Netherlands. Roaming in non-EU countries exceeds the pre-corona level.

Record high thanks to women’s football: Many O 2 customers stream the European Championship football final Germany vs. England abroad and ensure a new roaming peak value of around 120 Gbit/s.

Expansion of 5G roaming offer: O 2 now offers high-performance 5G roaming in 27 countries worldwide, including many tourism hotspots such as Spain, Italy, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates.

Expansion of the O 2 roaming data superhighway: O 2 has expanded its connections to the IP exchange networks for data traffic between foreign networks and the O 2 network. With capacities of 8 x 100 Gbit/s, the network is future-proof for the increasing use of roaming data.

As a network operator that connects most people in this country, O 2 Telefónica optimally adapts its own roaming portfolio to the needs of O 2 customers: The company has expanded its roaming capacities in the network just in time for the start of the summer holidays and its 5G roaming -Partner network significantly expanded. In addition, O 2 customers benefit from large data packages in their tariffs at an attractive price-performance ratio.

Summer time is roaming time o2 roaming

Data usage in roaming has increased continuously by around 50 percent, in line with data growth in the home O 2 network.
The holiday destination of Spain is again clearly the number 1 O 2 roaming hotspot this year: in the course of the year to date, O 2 customers have used around 4.5 million GB of mobile data here alone. Italy is in second place, followed by the Netherlands, Austria and France. Roaming use in non-EU countries is also increasing significantly due to many travel restrictions being lifted. Here, Switzerland tops the list of top roaming destinations, followed by Turkey, the USA and Serbia. Data usage in roaming is increasing continuously by around 50 percent in line with data growth in the home O 2 network: in the past 2021, the O 2 roaming data highway transported around 75 Gbit/s at its peak, in 2020 it was 50 Gbit/s, in 2019 it was just under 30 Gbit/s.

Thanks to 5G, surfing is even more relaxed on vacation

Since June 2022, O 2 customers have also been surfing the fast 5G network in other European countries. Since then, O2 has continuously expanded the 5G roaming offer. O2 currently offers 5G roaming in 27 countries* around the world. These include popular EU countries such as Spain, Italy, France, the Netherlands and Austria, as well as international travel favorites such as Thailand, Indonesia, Canada, Israel and the United Arab Emirates. The new, powerful 5G mobile standard improves the network experience and offers even higher speeds than the LTE/4G standard.

O2 expands roaming data highway

O2 has taken appropriate precautions for the increase in data and expanded the connections to the IPX networks in good time. Here the roaming signals of all customers in foreign partner networks are collected and transported to the O2 network. With a view to 5G and the increasing data usage of its customers abroad, O 2 has doubled its capacities to 8 x 100 Gbit/s and is therefore future-proof.

Roaming – unlimited mobile calls and internet access around the world

Telefónica Deutschland collaborates with over 540 mobile network operators (roaming partners) around the world so that its customers can make mobile calls and have mobile internet access in over 190 countries. As different as these countries are, we are pursuing a priority objective with our roaming partners: affordable mobile calls and internet access in foreign countries with attractive prices for our customers.
To this end, Telefónica Deutschland concludes roaming agreements with select network operators in over 190 countries to ensure technical connection as well as billing. The roaming agreements are reciprocal. They allow the customers of Telefónica Deutschland to make calls and access the internet on their foreign partner network. Conversely, customers of each roaming partner can also use Telefónica Deutschland’s network when they come to Germany.

Global roaming – by land, air or sea o2 roaming

The same mobile network can generally be used for both voice and data services as well as other mobile services. Aside from terrestrial roaming (i.e. on land), another issue is non-terrestrial roaming, which makes mobile calls possible at sea or on airplanes.
