Movistar Spain offers free in-store eSIM transfer
Beyond the sustainability benefits of eliminating the need for a physical SIM card, eSIMs offer numerous advantages. Their growing appeal has led to an increasing number of compatible smartphones, with most major carriers now supporting them. Movistar Spain, for instance, introduced eSIM technology in 2018 and has been offering support for the eSIM Quick Transfer feature on iPhone for over a year. Movistar was the first operator in Spain to offer the eSIM Quick Transfer for iPhone!
This December, the Spanish operator enabled its customers to activate eSIMs on new devices free of charge at Movistar stores. This service is available not only for new subscribers but also for existing customers looking to switch from a physical SIM to a virtual one.
The eSIM, or virtual SIM, offers several advantages. It’s more convenient as there’s no need to physically handle it when switching phones. It allows you to use multiple lines on one device, whether by combining multiple eSIMs or an eSIM with a physical SIM. Additionally, it’s more sustainable, eliminating the need for plastic and the shipping of physical cards.
While activating an eSIM is relatively straightforward, many people still prefer visiting their operator’s physical store for assistance. Previously, Movistar only allowed customers to request a QR code in-store, which they would then scan on their mobile device to complete the eSIM activation process at home. This transition to an eSIM with a QR code also came with a fee of 14.50 euros.
Starting this December, however, customers can link their device to the eSIM activation or change process directly in-store. Best of all, this service is now free of charge.

Movistar now offers customers the ability to complete the entire eSIM transition process in-store without needing a QR code or any additional cost. However, this service comes with a condition: it must be a new device, regardless of whether it was bought from Movistar or another retailer. Existing devices, even if eSIM-compatible, are not eligible for this process.
