Mexico’s CFE TEIT introduces eSIM service

CFE Telecomunicaciones e Internet para Todos (CFE TEIT), the Mexican government’s MVNO, has launched an eSIM service for its mobile customers. This means that CFE TEIT customers with compatible devices can now activate their mobile service using an eSIM instead of a physical SIM card.

CFE-TEIT announced it will start distributing SIM cards and eSIMs through its website to guarantee the right to information access to the population. Simultaneously, it will deploy 8,616 towers in remote areas.

The company said it will feature a network of 18,586 charging points consisting of Financiera Para el Bienestar (FINABIEN) offices, the Mexican Postal Service (SEPOMEX), and small businesses distributed along the 32 states, where users will be able to top up their phones. Furthermore, CFE-TEIT mentioned that over 233 FINABIEN and SEPOMEX offices will be distributing free SIM cards.

We are committed to closing the digital gap at the lowest cost for our end users. We offer monthly packages starting from MX$30 (US$1.75), semi-annual packages from US$400, or annual packages from MX$700,” CFE-TEIT stated in a press release.

eSIM is soldered directly to your smartphone’s motherboard, making it a non-removable component. At first glance, this might appear to be a limitation, especially for globetrotters who often swap physical SIM cards to avoid steep roaming charges. However, the eSIM comes with a slew of benefits that more than make up for this initial drawback.

Benefits of eSIMs

eSIMs offer a number of benefits over physical SIM cards, including:

  • Convenience: eSIMs can be activated and managed remotely, without the need to visit a store or wait for a physical SIM card to be shipped.
  • Security: eSIMs are more secure than physical SIM cards, as they are harder to lose or steal.
  • Environmental friendliness: eSIMs are more environmentally friendly than physical SIM cards, as they do not require the production of plastic cards.

How to get an eSIM from CFE TEIT

To get an eSIM from CFE TEIT, customers will need to have a compatible device and a valid CFE TEIT account. Customers can then activate their eSIM by following these steps:

  1. Go to the CFE TEIT website.
  2. Enter your phone number.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to activate your eSIM.

Not all devices are compatible with eSIMs. Some of the compatible devices include:

In Mexico, the telecommunications market is primarily controlled by three companies: Mexico-based Telcel, the largest in terms of user base; US-based AT&T; and Spain-based Telefónica Movistar. However, experts have raised concerns about the potential impacts of offering mobile services at prices below market rates, as done by CFE-TEIT.
