As part of a renegotiated contract with Telmex, the Mexico City government said that local residents will be able to access free Wi-Fi through the capital’s closed-circuit television system, BN America reports.

We’re going to generate 14,500 free Wi-Fi access points in Mexico City, usually through the same links we use to connect the cameras, on the same poles,” said the head of the digital innovation public agency (ADIP), José Merino, at a press conference.

The service will be rolled out gradually, with the goal of providing Wi-Fi in the city’s 15,310 CCTV sites by 2020. The rollout will also expand the CCTV connection speeds to 20MB from the current 2MB.

“Starting next year we’ll be able to have Full HD cameras and maybe even 4K,” said Juan Manuel García, who heads the city’s command center, known as C5.

Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said the new contract with Telmex will save the government money. Mexico City was paying the telco 970mn pesos (nearly US$50mn). “Now we’re going to get more for less, a saving of little over 300mn pesos,” the mayor said. mexico city wi-fi
