Megafon Russia tests 5G roaming in Helsinki
MegaFon Russia tested the capabilities of the international 5G-roaming network, increasing the speed of mobile data transmission to 1.1 Gbit⁄s during the tests. The result was recorded in Helsinki using the Speedtest app on a Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra 5G smartphone.
“The result obtained is five times faster than the speed required for comfortable use of mobile Internet in 5G roaming, but with such a rapid development of technologies, perhaps this indicator will soon become familiar to us. MegaFon traditionally pays great attention to the quality of communication, including the speed of data transfer – we are the leader in this indicator among Russian operators and we want to be sure that with the gradual opening of borders, our subscribers will have the fastest Internet on their foreign trips, ”commented the commercial director MegaFona Vlad Wolfson.
The testing identified the current potential for 5G speed in international roaming. In the near future, gigabit speeds will enable subscribers to get a completely new user experience, for example, they will help to fully immerse themselves in AR and VR technologies, and start video streaming in 4K and 8K formats from a smartphone.
In February 2020, MegaFon Russia was the first Russian operator to offer international 5G roaming to its subscribers. Now it is already available in 17 out of 56 * countries of the world where fifth-generation networks have been launched into commercial operation: in Bahrain, Vietnam, Hong Kong, China, Kuwait, Latvia, Monaco, the Netherlands, UAE, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Taiwan, Finland, Switzerland , Sweden, Estonia and South Korea.
Connection to the fifth generation network is possible using any smartphone that supports this technology. Depending on the model, the subscriber may need to switch the device to 5G mode. At the end of January 2021, more than 200 thousand such devices were registered in the MegaFon network, over the year their number increased more than 500 times.

The cost of a SIM card is 300 rubles, the same amount will appear on the balance of the subscriber after its activation.
