Lebara Germany Introduces eSIMs for Customers
Lebara Germany has officially joined the growing list of operators offering eSIM technology, bringing a long-awaited feature to its customers.
After years of relying solely on physical SIM cards, the company confirmed that eSIM support went live on 27 August 2025, giving both new and existing users the ability to activate their plans without the need for plastic cards.
Why eSIM Matters
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is built directly into modern smartphones and other connected devices, removing the need to insert or swap a physical SIM card. Customers can activate service instantly by scanning a QR code, making it faster and more convenient to get connected. Beyond convenience, eSIMs also reduce plastic waste, supporting a more sustainable approach to mobile connectivity.
How It Works for Lebara Customers
- Existing customers can log in to their my Lebara account, select “Switch to eSIM”, and generate a QR code that can be scanned from the phone’s network settings.
- New customers can simply choose the eSIM option during the sign-up process. Once their account is active, the QR code becomes available immediately.
The transition is designed to be seamless, with users able to keep their existing numbers while benefiting from instant digital activation.
Benefits of Switching
Lebara highlights three main advantages for customers who move to eSIM:
- Convenience – no more waiting for delivery or handling SIM cards.
- Speed – plans can be activated online within minutes.
- Sustainability – eSIMs eliminate the plastic and packaging of traditional SIMs.
For frequent travelers and tech-savvy users, eSIMs also mean easier management of multiple numbers and profiles without swapping cards.
Lebara’s Network Journey in Germany
Lebara first entered the German market in 2010, initially operating on Telekom Deutschland’s infrastructure. Since 2022, it has run as a full Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) using the Telefónica (O₂) network, giving it more control over its mobile services. The company itself has undergone several ownership changes, with Waterland Private Equity acquiring it in 2024, signaling fresh investment into digital-first services like eSIM.
A Step Toward the Future
With the launch of eSIMs in Germany, Lebara is aligning with industry trends that increasingly favor digital activation over physical distribution. For customers, the move promises faster access, greater flexibility, and a more eco-friendly alternative.
As more devices ship with eSIM as standard, Lebara’s rollout ensures its users won’t be left behind in the shift toward next-generation connectivity.
