Kazakhstan to change country’s telephony code

Kazakhstan currently shares the +7 country code with Russia, but this will now be replaced with the three-digit code +997. Both codes will be used during a two-year transitional period, with the full switch planned in 2025. Kazakhstan telephony code

Telephone numbers in Kazakhstan are under a unified numbering plan with Russia with the country calling code +7. Historically, +7 was used as the Soviet Union country calling code. Following the break-up of the Soviet Union, all former republics except Russia and Kazakhstan switched to new country codes.

Kazakhstan will completely switch to the telephone code +997 by January 2025. This news was announced by the Committee of Telecommunications.

According to the agency, the country has developed and approved a plan to transition to the telephone code +997 on communication networks. According to this plan, a full transition is scheduled for January 2025. Kazakhstan has reserved this code back in 2021.

According to recommendations of the International Telecommunication Union, during the two years of transition, both the current (+7) and new (+997) country codes can be used.

The department also noted that the issue of changing the subscriber number as identification for various social media networks and messenger apps is being worked out with the individual owner companies of these applications. Kazakhstan telephony code
