IIJ to launch Voice eSIM for IIJmio users on NTT Docomo network

Internet Initiative Japan Inc., one of Japan’s leading Internet access and comprehensive network solutions providers, announced the availability from September 22, 2023, of an eSIM with voice call functionality (“Voice eSIM”) for users of the IIJmio mobile service Giga Plan Type D (NTT Docomo network), an MVNO service aimed at individual customers. IIJmio began Voice eSIM provision last October for its Type A (au network) service. Besides enabling service activation as early as the same day of purchase, the eSIM can be used as a backup in case of network trouble. These advantages have made it a popular choice and prompted numerous requests for Voice eSIM provision for Type D as well, a need being addressed with the new service offering. The monthly charges for Type D Voice eSIM service are the same as those for a physical SIM with voice call functionality and for Type A Voice eSIM service.

Timed with the start of the new service, IIJ will also support switching from a physical SIM card with voice call functionality to a Voice eSIM, as well as switching between Type A and Type D services. The ability to switch freely between a physical SIM and Voice eSIM, and between Type A and D services, will give customers the advantage of more flexible Giga Plan use based on the mobile device model, service area, carrier, or other conditions.

How to sign up IIJ Voice eSIM

  • Sign up for an account on the IIJmio website.
  • Purchase a package at an electronics store, convenience store or other retail outlet and use it to sign up on the IIJmio website.

To activate a Type D Voice eSIM, a serial number (EID)(*2) needs to be entered on the mobile device. In the signup procedure, after the customer’s identity is confirmed and the EID is entered on the device, an activation code is shown on a members-only web page (for eSIM use). This code is read by the eSIM-conformant device in which the EID was entered. Once the SIM profile has been downloaded, the service can be used.

  • (*2)An EID (Embedded Identity Document) is an identifier required for eSIM use. It can be found in the setup information for the mobile device or on the package, etc. Note that during the activation procedure, if the EID is not entered within a certain time period, the application will be canceled.
  • (*)In the case of an iPhone, eSIM carrier activation can be used, enabling the SIM profile to be downloaded without the step of reading the activation code.
