Hyundai to let drivers use their iPhone to unlock their vehicle

Hyundai is to let iPhone users lock and unlock their vehicles and control selected vehicle systems remotely with a digital key compatible with Apple devices.

Hyundai began rolling out a digital car key in 2019, but to date, this has only been available for use on selected Android smartphones.

The 2020 Sonata was the first Hyundai model to include the Hyundai Digital Key, which allows the Sonata to be unlocked, locked, started and driven with a smartphone.  The system also allows the primary user to share Digital Key access with three other users.  You can actually send someone a “shared key” from clear across the country.

“Hyundai Motor Group is planning to unveil its digital key for iPhone users within this year,” Business Korea reports.

“Its digital key is currently limited to Samsung and LG Android smartphones. The group recently obtained an API for digital key realisation from Apple.

Apple unveiled its NFC-enabled CarKey feature for iPhone users in June 2020 and BMW is to add support for ultra-wideband (UWB) digital keys later this year. Samsung is working with Audi, BMW, Ford and Genesis to add support for both NFC and UWB digital keys.

Tesla developed the app so that various parts of its vehicles can be controlled. Hyundai’s digital key is similar to that of BMW and can be shared by up to three persons. hyundai digital key

With Hyundai Digital Key, you can:

Lock, unlock and start your Hyundai (requires NFC)
Using your smartphone, simply tap your phone on the door handle to lock or unlock your vehicle. When you’re ready to drive, just place your smartphone on the wireless charging pad to start your vehicle.

Remotely control your vehicle using Bluetooth
Hyundai Digital Key lets you remotely control your vehicle from a distance using Bluetooth technology. Use the button in the app to remotely start / stop your engine, lock / unlock your doors, turn panic mode on / off or open your trunk.

Share and manage digital keys
When you want to give someone access to your vehicle, easily create and send them a digital key. Once the invite is accepted, they will be able to use the your H. Digital Key app to access or control your vehicle based on the permissions and time period you’ve allowed. Also pause your own digital keys or delete shared keys using the app or on MyHyundai.com.
