Free phone numbers are not free if called while roaming

Habit means that when you spot a free number, e.g. 0800, you may assume that it won’t cost you anything. Don’t fall into this trap and remember that local free phone numbers will cost if phoning from abroad (not EU countries).

Billmonitor mentioned one of their clients which was recently forced to pay nearly £300 for two calls to an 0800 number when she was abroad in the US on business.

‘Free’ roaming in Europe doesn’t necessarily mean you can use your phone with gleeful abandon while abroad. For example, the most common countries people think should be free with a Europe roaming package but aren’t are Switzerland and Turkey. So, always double check which countries your roaming includes. Also, if you’re based anywhere near the border, be mindful of which signal you are picking up. For example, in Geneva, depending on where you are based, you might pick up either Swiss, German or French signals.

Out of plan international costs can be very high, sometimes 10x what you would normally pay.

Can you ring a 0800 number from abroad?
The method for calling an 0800 number from abroad is the same as calling any other UK number. Just drop the leading “0” and add either +44 or 0044. For example, to call Numbergroup’s 0800 number from outside the UK, you should dial either “+44800 3101010” or “0044800 3101010” depending on your phone’s call settings.
