If you’re unfamiliar with personal hotspots or unsure about setting one up, this article is here to guide you through all you need to know about personal hotspots.

What is a hot spot?

First of all, the question: what is a hotspot? Simply put, a hotspot is a place where there is wireless internet. You probably have this in the form of a WiFi hotspot, but it is also possible to create a mobile or personal hotspot. If the WiFi hotspot doesn’t work at home or at the office, for example, or if you’re in the park and still want to open your laptop.

But you can also use a personal hotspot to share your mobile internet with other people who, for example, do not have an internet bundle and still want to look up something via the internet.

A mobile hotspot: how does it work?

And how exactly does such a mobile hotspot work? We’ll explain that to you. In the settings of your phone, you indicate that you want to enable the mobile hotspot. For example, an internet connection can be made with your phone that ‘spends’ the mobile data of your subscription to the internet that is used via the external connection. You ‘extend’ your internet subscription to a device other than your own telephone.

How do you create a hotspot?

How can you turn on such a hotspot? You can create a WiFi hotspot by installing a router. But there are several ways to create a mobile hotspot, which we will explain to you all. Creating a hotspot via an iPhone and Android phone, for example, is slightly different. That’s why we cut the explanation so that you can immediately continue reading the explanation that applies to your phone.

Create a hotspot with your iPhone

You can activate a hotspot on your iPhone by navigating to ‘Personal hotspot’ via your ‘Settings’. There you will see a slider that you can turn on or off. The moment you flip this slider, the personal hotspot on your iPhone is turned on. Other devices can then connect to the internet and you are sharing your mobile data or WiFi via your iPhone. Voilá, this is how you can create a hotspot on your iPhone!

Create a hotspot with an Android phone

As described earlier, creating a personal hotspot via an Android phone is slightly different. Open your phone’s Settings and choose ‘Tethering and Mobile Hotspot’. There you choose from the option ‘Set up WiFi hotspot’ to give your own connection a name and set a password – of course, you don’t want people to just come and snatch your internet. Then turn on the mobile WiFi hotspot and that’s it: you have your own mobile hotspot.

What should you do if the hotspot on your iPhone is not working?

If you have just set everything up nicely, you find out that the hotspot of your iPhone is not working. Fortunately, there are a number of things you can do.

  • Check if you have the latest version of iOS on your phone
  • Restart your iPhone and also turn off and on the device that wants to connect to the personal hotspot
  • Check if the personal hotspot is enabled on your iPhone
  • The last step you can take is to restore your network settings. You do this by going to ‘Settings’ > ‘General’ on your iPhone > ‘Transfer or reset device‘ > ‘Reset’ and then choosing ‘Restore network settings’.

Mobile hotspot costs personal hotspot

There is no cost to create a Personal Hotspot. The only costs you incur are those of your subscription because the internet that is used comes from the bundle that is included in your subscription. So you do not incur any extra mobile hotspot costs and you can enjoy your internet bundle with others.
