Brazil Targets Improved Internet Access to Boost Tourism

Brazil, a country renowned for its vibrant culture, stunning beaches, and lush rainforests, is taking steps to enhance its appeal for tourists in the digital age. The Ministry of Communications and the Ministry of Tourism have joined forces in a concerted effort to address a common challenge faced by travelers: inadequate internet coverage in key tourist destinations. The Problem: Connectivity Woes

While Brazil has made significant strides in internet access, many popular tourist spots still suffer from spotty connectivity or lack reliable Wi-Fi. This can be a major frustration for visitors who rely on the internet for trip planning, navigation, communication, and sharing their experiences online. In an increasingly connected world, this digital disadvantage puts Brazil at risk of falling behind competitors in the global tourism market.

Solutions on the Horizon

The idea is to build public-private partnerships for investments in telecommunications infrastructure, enabling the provision of quality internet and the availability of free Wi-Fi in strategic locations such as, for example, natural and urban parks, airports, tourist attractions and areas with a large flow of tourists.

“The lack of quality internet in our tourist destinations is a bottleneck that can hinder the full development of the sector in the country, but this reality will change thanks to the partnership signed today between the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Communications. I am sure that the offer of free quality internet will be an important competitive differentiator for Brazil”, stated the Minister of Tourism, Celso Sabino.

The two departments will develop an action plan defining criteria for selecting tourist destinations to be covered by “Get to Know Brazil: Connected”. The means to enable digital transformation will also be defined, involving negotiations with operators and the improvement of telecommunications infrastructure, among other initiatives.

Under the signed protocol, MTur will coordinate with state and municipal public tourism institutions to obtain information on access and quality of connection to the telecommunications network in Brazilian tourist destinations, both for national and international visitors.

The Ministry of Communications will organize, together with the competent bodies, the development of telecommunications infrastructure, as well as mobilizing infrastructure providers for these services to enable access and improve the quality of connection to the telecommunications network in national tourist destinations.

Benefits Abound

The potential benefits of this initiative are vast. Reliable internet access will significantly enhance the tourist experience, making trip planning and on-the-ground logistics far smoother. Moreover, a robust digital infrastructure has the potential to unlock the full economic power of Brazil’s tourism industry. Increased visitor numbers, longer stays, and greater spending at local businesses will translate into a thriving tourism sector and substantial economic growth.

Challenges and Responsible Development

Of course, challenges remain. Careful planning will be necessary to balance the need for expanded infrastructure with environmental protection, particularly in sensitive ecosystems. Additionally, the long-term sustainability of the project needs to be considered. Questions about maintenance, upgrades, and the potential to benefit local communities outside major tourist hubs all require proactive solutions.

A Positive Step Forward Brazil Internet Access

Brazil’s commitment to improving internet connectivity for tourists is a welcome and necessary step. By addressing this digital shortcoming, the nation sends a powerful message to the world: Brazil is open for business and ready to embrace the needs of the modern traveler.

The term of the Protocol of Intent between the two departments will be 24 months and may be extended by signing an addendum.
