The number of 5g subscribers in South Korea increased by more than 500,000 for three consecutive months from May. South Korea added 850,000 in August, as Samsung Electronics launched its Galaxy Note 10 5G phablet on the local market. The number of 5G users topped 3.98 million at end-October, following the addition of 516,000 users in the month, according to the data compiled by the Ministry of Science and ICT.

The nation’s three carriers — SK Telecom Co., KT Corp., and LG Uplus Corp. — rolled out the commercial 5G network in early April and have aggressively promoted their new service for premium smartphones.

SK Telecom’s 5G customers accounted for 44.4 percent as of October, trailed by KT with 30.4 percent LG Uplus with 25.1 percent, the ministry said.

The upward momentum is expected to continue this month, with the number expected to breach the 5-million mark.

South Korea 5G – update

As of September 2021, the number of 5G subscribers in South Korea has surpassed 25 million, according to data from the country’s three major mobile network operators – SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus.

SK Telecom is currently the market leader in 5G subscribers, with over 12 million customers as of September 2021. KT and LG Uplus follow with around 7 million and 6 million 5G subscribers respectively.

South Korea has been at the forefront of 5G network technology, with the country’s mobile network operators investing heavily in the development and deployment of 5G infrastructure. The government has also played a significant role in promoting 5G adoption, with initiatives such as subsidies for 5G devices and services.

The high adoption rate of 5G in South Korea has enabled the country to lead in the development of 5G-enabled applications and services, such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and autonomous vehicles.
