Italia prices compared to those in the EU: According to the latest data from the European Commission’s Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) report for 2021, Italy’s prices for mobile data and fixed broadband are above the EU average.
The report shows that the average price for mobile data in Italy is €7.4 per GB, which is higher than the EU average of €4.9 per GB. However, it’s worth noting that this is a significant decrease from the previous year’s price of €8.8 per GB.
For fixed broadband, the report shows that the average price for a basic package (up to 30 Mbps download speed) in Italy is €25.1 per month, which is also above the EU average of €22.3 per month.

Italy, as member of EU, implement “roam like at home” rules which mean that when you use your mobile phone while travelling outside your home country in any EU country you don’t have to pay any additional roaming charges.
You benefit from these rules when calling (to mobile and fixed phones), sending text messages (SMS) and using data services while abroad. These rules also apply when receiving calls or texts while roaming even if the person you are calling is using a different service provider.
You pay exactly the same price for using these services when travelling in the EU as you would if you were at home.
Mobile users must be aware that outside EU countries, on the ships, cruisers, planes etc. there are still roaming charges and they can be very high. We can help you to avoid them and find best solutions for your needs.

eSIM cards for Italy We do recommend eSIM cards when traveling: no more swapping of physical sim cards, everything is automated on your phone through easy to fill out codes. MOBILE VIRTUAL NETWORK OPERATORS
In 2020, Poste Mobile led the mobile virtual network operator (MNVO) market in Italy. Owned by Poste Italiane Group, the leading postal services company in the country, it generated 37.7 percent of the segment’s turnover. Ranking second, the Swiss Fastweb had a market share of 30.3 percent. Finally, Coop Italia – the first MNVO to launch in Italy – accounted for 15.8 percent of the market.
The MNVO segment in the context
MNVOs have been operating in Italy since 2007. Rather than owning infrastructure, they make agreements with mobile network operators to access their networks. For example, Poste Mobile leverages Wind’s infrastructure, while Fastweb signed a deal with Telecom Italia to utilize its 4G network at least until 2020. In the Italian mobile network market, MNVOs played a marginal role: in 2018, they accounted only for 4.4 percent of the market.
The vibrant mobile market has seen a fall in the number of subscribers in recent years as customers respond to attractive off-net pricing and bundled offers from the main providers. The market underwent considerable changes following the merger of Wind and 3 Italia (becoming Wind Tre).
