Which Company Leads in AI Chip Performance: Qualcomm or Nvidia?
According to recently published test data, Qualcomm’s AI chips outperformed Nvidia’s in two out of three power efficiency measures. However, in one category, both Qualcomm and Nvidia were outperformed by Neuchips, a Taiwanese startup. These findings on the “Best AI Chip Qualcomm Nvidia” highlight that while Qualcomm has the edge in some areas, there is still room for competition and innovation within the AI chip market. As the demand for more efficient AI chips continues to rise, it will be interesting to see how companies like Qualcomm, Nvidia, and Neuchips continue to differentiate themselves and push the boundaries of performance and efficiency. Nvidia has established dominance in the market for training large-scale AI models with vast amounts of data. Following this training, the models are utilized in a process known as “inference,” where they are used to perform tasks such as generating text responses and recognizing objects in images.
As companies increasingly incorporate AI technologies into their products, analysts predict that the demand for data center inference chips will rapidly grow. However, Reuters reports that businesses, such as Google, are exploring ways to control the additional costs that come with doing so.
Qualcomm Takes on Nvidia in AI Chip Market with Cloud AI 100 Chip
One significant expense is energy consumption, and Qualcomm is leveraging its experience in designing chips for battery-powered devices, like smartphones, to create the Cloud AI 100 chip, which prioritizes power efficiency.
MLCommons, an engineering consortium that maintains widely used AI chip testing benchmarks, released data that revealed Qualcomm‘s AI 100 chip outperformed Nvidia’s H100 chip in classifying images based on the number of data center server queries each chip could execute per watt. Qualcomm’s AI 100 achieved 197.6 server queries per watt, whereas Nvidia’s H100 chip hit 108.4 queries per watt. Neuchips, a startup founded by a renowned Taiwanese chip academic, Youn-Long Lin, secured the first position with 227 queries per watt.
Qualcomm also surpassed Nvidia in object detection, with a score of 3.2 queries per watt, compared to Nvidia’s 2.4 queries per watt. Object detection can be utilized in various applications, such as analyzing customer traffic in retail stores.
Neuchips Emerges as Challenger to Qualcomm and Nvidia in AI Chip Market
In a test of natural language processing, which is a commonly used AI technology in chatbots, Nvidia ranked first in both absolute performance and power efficiency. Nvidia achieved 10.8 samples per watt, with Neuchips ranking second at 8.9 samples per watt and Qualcomm coming in third place at 7.5 samples per watt.
