Kena starts SIM card activation via national ID system

You can choose to purchase a Kena offer online or through the 181 Customer Service operator and receive and activate the SIM comfortably from home by selecting “Receive and Activate from home” on the site and in the APP. Once you receive the SIM by post, you can choose whether to activate it using your SPID credentials or with a short video for your identification.

Thus, another Italian mobile operator has introduced the possibility of identifying the owner of the SIM purchased remotely via SPID (Public Digital Identity System).

When trying to purchase a mobile offer and choosing to have the SIM delivered by post with online activation by the customer, it is now indicated that the identification of the holder can also be carried out via SPID, as well as via video identification (a service that was previously called Kena Check-In, which until now involved a video call with an operator, while now it is sufficient to record a short video).

In this way, the operator has updated the website page that was previously dedicated to the Kena Check-In service, where it is now possible to consult the new identification methods for activating Kena SIMs purchased remotely, which are now accessed via SPID or recording a Video Selfie.

This is therefore the same modality already introduced by TIM last year, in November 2023, for customers of the main brand.

Please note that, as announced on 4 October 2023, the possibility of using SPID and other digital identity systems to activate a SIM was approved by AGCOM at the meeting of the Commission for Infrastructure and Networks on 27 September 2023. This innovation was introduced to simplify the procedures for activating or changing SIMs, including Mobile Number Portability (MNP).

In fact, compared to video identification, using SPID or CIE further reduces the time since, once the SIM has been delivered, it is not necessary to wait for an operator to verify the video sent, but once you have logged in with your credentials, the SIM will be active immediately or within a few hours.

Therefore, by purchasing a Kena offer online, on the website, and from the app, it is possible to select the “Receive and Activate from home” option, with which the SIM will be delivered to your home directly in your letterbox, without the need for the holder to be present at the time of delivery, and in this case, it will be possible to carry out identification directly online, or via SPID or with a Video selfie.

The same method is also available by purchasing a Kena offer by phone through Customer Service 181. Furthermore, identification via SPID or Video Selfie is also available for Kena SIMs purchased through Kena SIM&GO, the blisters with Kena SIMs that can be purchased in some stores and then activated independently by the customer.

Alternatively, for remote purchases, new Kena customers can always choose home delivery with identification by courier (which requires the presence of the SIM holder at the time of delivery) or collection and activation directly at the tobacconist.

How does Kena SIM activation work via SPID or Video Selfie?

In detail, by choosing the “Receive and Activate from Home” delivery method, once the Kena SIM has been received by post, the customer will be able to activate the SIM directly online at any time, choosing whether to identify themselves via SPID or with a short video.

In particular, if you use the Kena app for mobile devices, in the main menu you will have to select the item “Activate SIM SPID/VideoID”, while if you use the Kena website, on the dedicated page you can click on the “ACTIVATE SIM SPID/VIDEO SELFIE” button, which takes you to a dedicated page to proceed with identification via SPID or video.

For identification via SPID, the operator recommends preparing, in addition to the SPID credentials, a photo of the SIM or QR Code of the eSIM of the old operator, if number portability has been requested, the mobile contact number indicated during the purchase phase to digitally sign the contract via OTP, and the Order Number reported in the Order Receipt email.

With this new method, you will be redirected to the SPID login screen, where you will have to click on the “Enter with SPID” button to select your digital identity provider to continue. At this point, you will be asked to log in with your SPID credentials to confirm your identity and authorize the operation.

Video Selfie method

If you choose identification via Video Selfie, in this case, the new Kena customer will have to make a video with a smartphone or a PC equipped with a video camera, microphone, and internet connection.

In this case, before starting the SIM activation process, the operator recommends preparing the front/back photos of the identity document indicated during the purchase, the front/back photos of the health card or tax code, the photo of the SIM or QR Code of the eSIM of the old operator, if number portability has been requested, the mobile contact number indicated during the purchase to digitally sign the contract via OTP, and the Order Number reported in the Order Receipt email.

In both cases of video identification and SPID identification, the customer will then have to sign the contract digitally by selecting the signature fields and entering a temporary password (OTP), which concludes the procedure.

In this way, in case of identification with SPID, the new Kena SIM will be active within a few hours; while choosing video identification, it is necessary to wait for the video validation.

Please remember that with Kena, TIM’s second brand, customers can use the latter operator’s network in 2G and 4G LTE, with a maximum browsing speed that, with the current offers on the market, barring changes, is equal to 60 Mbps in download and 30 Mbps in upload.
