Costa Rica Launches Free Wi-Fi in Underserved Areas

Costa Rica‘s telecommunications regulator, Sutel has announced the activation of the first 23 sites in its ‘Connected Public Spaces’ initiative to bring Wi-Fi connectivity to digital divide areas throughout the country. costa rica wi-fi
The sites offer free Wi-Fi at speeds of up to 6Mbps and will be funded by resources from the National Telecommunications Fund (Fonatel).
A total of 515 sites including parks, libraries, train stations, civic centers, and public universities, in 82 cantons will have hotspots installed, said Sutel. In total, 515 Zii Zones will be connected and distributed as follows: 419 public spaces (parks and squares), 28 train stations of the Costa Rican Railway Institute (Incofer) , 61 public libraries, the National Library System (SINABI) and 7 Civic Centers by peace. The Public Connected Spaces program will implement 515 Zii Zones in a period of 24 months, first connecting public spaces where there is currently access to services and then adding the places where it is necessary to build infrastructure.
