Measurements by the IT consultancy IK-T on approximately 2,500 motorway kilometers show white spots in the 4G mobile phone network on highways. The mobile coverage of the three network operators reached after the check with a calibrated measuring system for German Telekom 98 percent, for Vodafone 93 percent and for Telefónica / O2 only 71 percent. Four million measurement points were recorded for this.

Minister of Economic Affairs Aiwanger: “We are the first federal state to take the initiative to eliminate the mobile phone gaps.” The optimum supply in Bavaria is an important future topic for us. “The network operators are committed to offering a complete network by the end of the year.” Aiwanger announced: “We will also review the quality of the networks on the ICE routes.”

In 2015, the Federal Network Agency linked the frequency allocation for the LTE network to the three operators with the obligation to ensure full coverage of the federal motorways by 1 January 2020.

Telekom covers 2,480 kilometers of a total of 2,535 kilometers by his own admission with their LTE network. 55 kilometers are still missing. “We have the last weak spots on the screen,” said Sven Schreiber, project manager for mobile communications along the highways at Telekom Deutschland. “We will be commissioning three new locations on the highways in Bavaria this year, as well as expanding four locations with additional LTE services.”
