Tanzania biometrically registered SIM: Only 12% of SIMs have been registered ahead of year-end deadline

In 2019, the government of Tanzania announced a new requirement that all SIM cards in the country must be biometrically registered. This means that anyone who wants to use a mobile phone in Tanzania must provide their biometric data, such as fingerprints and facial scans, to the government. Tanzania biometrically registered SIM
The Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA) says only 5.2 million mobile phone users (12 percent) have biometrically registered their SIM cards ahead of the 31 December deadline.
In May the government through Tanzania Communication Regulatory Authority (TCRA) directed all Subscriber Identification Module (Sim) cards to biometrically register their lines by the end of the year.
TCRA and service providers have launched a publicity campaign on the campaign. Head of TCRA communication department Fredrick Ntobi said more than 39 million subscribers have not registered their lines and he insisted that TCRA wouldn’t push back the registration deadline.
“I call for subscribers to make sure that their lines are registered before the December 31 deadline; those who will fail to do so will be locked out of the service,” said Mr Ntobi. Tan

Reducing incidents of cybercrime and fraud Tanzania biometrically registered SIM

The goal of this initiative is to reduce incidents of cybercrime and fraud, as well as to improve national security by better tracking the use of mobile devices. Critics of the policy, however, argue that it could be used to violate citizens’ privacy and restrict freedom of expression.

The implementation of the policy has been controversial, with reports of long lines and technical glitches at registration centers causing frustration among citizens. Additionally, some have raised concerns about the security of the biometric data being collected, and the potential for misuse or theft of that data.

Despite these concerns, the government has continued to push forward with the policy, stating that it is necessary to protect national security and combat cybercrime.
