Switzerland ranks first for digital investments per capita in 2018

Per capita spending on IT and telecommunications in Germany rose by 2 percent to 1,584 euros * Switzerland, USA and Denmark are international leaders

Expenditure on information technology (IT) and telecommunications in Germany rose by 2 percent in 2018 to 1,584 euros per inhabitant. On average, the 26 EU member states spent 1,248 euros, which is also an increase of 2 percent. 

This is reported by digital association Bitkom on the basis of current data from the European Information Technology Observatory (EITO).

In an international comparison, Switzerland is in the lead with 3,214 euros (+3 percent). The US is followed by 3,126 euros (+5 percent). The Scandinavian countries complete the global top group. In Denmark, digital investment increased to € 2,483 per capita (+2 per cent), in Sweden to € 2,362 (+3 per cent), in Norway to € 2,290 (+3 per cent) and in Finland to € 2,071 (+2 per cent) , Clearly ahead of Germany, despite the Brexit turmoil, is the United Kingdom (2,002 euros, +2 percent), followed by the Netherlands (1,998 euros, +3 percent) and Japan with the second weakest growth in the top 10 (1,687 euros, +1 Percent). 

Above average, but at a low level, European digital spending grew in Hungary (558 euros, +5 percent) and Romania (276 euros, +7 percent). Russia (275 euros, +5 percent), Turkey (234 euros, +7 percent) and India (56 euros, +11 percent) are among the fastest growing markets worldwide.

Expenditure on IT and telecommunications are direct investments in the future and competitiveness of the business location,” says Bitkom President Achim Berg. “By international standards, Germany is far behind other leading industrialized nations. We urgently need to improve this sobering balance sheet and significantly accelerate digitization. Our ambition should be to be a pioneer and to be successful in promoting a European Digital Single Market. “
