Smart and Nokia Test Faster Roaming Data in Europe

Smart Communications, the wireless unit of PLDT, has completed a live demonstration with Nokia that is really about one of roaming’s oldest irritations: why does mobile data sometimes feel worse abroad, even when the visited network is perfectly good?

 

The trial showed how outbound roaming traffic from Smart subscribers travelling in Europe could be routed through a nearby European point of presence instead of being sent back to the Philippines first. That process is known as local breakout, or LBO. Smart says the demo, conducted earlier this year at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, delivered lower latency, faster browsing and better app responsiveness using Nokia’s Core SaaS Edge for Roaming solution.

The hidden problem with roaming

For travelers, roaming is judged by a simple standard: does the phone work as if I were local?

The answer is often “almost, but not quite.” Traditional home-routed roaming gives the home operator more control over policy, charging and subscriber services, but it can also send data on a long journey. A Filipino traveler in Spain may connect to a Spanish network, yet their data can still be anchored through infrastructure back home. That extra distance is one reason roaming can feel sluggish in everyday apps.

GSMA has previously noted that roaming latency in Europe can rise sharply because traffic is often routed through the user’s home network. A recent academic review makes the same point: local breakout can create a more native-like experience, but adoption has been slowed by policy enforcement, billing, quality-of-service guarantees and trust between operators.

Why Nokia’s Core SaaS angle is interesting

Nokia’s role here is important because the story is not simply “route traffic locally.” Operators may like the performance idea and still worry about the operational mess behind it.

The market is moving in the same direction

Smart is not alone in trying to make roaming feel less like a compromise. BICS, for example, markets roaming breakout as a way for operators to keep traffic closer to end users while retaining visibility, security and real-time traffic steering. In the eSIM and global connectivity world, mobile network aggregators chase a similar promise: closer breakout, better performance, and fewer “why is my roaming slow?” moments.

But there is a difference. Travel eSIM providers often solve the problem from the user side: install another plan, connect through a partner network, and avoid classic roaming bills. Operator-led LBO tries to fix the experience inside the subscriber’s existing mobile relationship. That is cleaner for loyal postpaid users, business travelers and families who simply want their normal SIM to behave better abroad.

It may be less relevant for travelers whose only priority is the cheapest short-trip data bundle. For them, a local SIM or travel eSIM may still be more attractive. Operators also need to prove that local breakout can scale across destinations, roaming partners, charging systems and compliance requirements without creating new complexity behind the scenes.

The Smart-Nokia demo is small in commercial terms, but strategically meaningful. Roaming is no longer just about coverage maps and daily fees. It is becoming a performance product.

On the other, operators are under pressure to make traditional roaming feel modern again. Local breakout speaks to both worlds: it improves the experience without asking the traveler to understand the network.
