MTS has made its 5ica portfolio more useful for Serbian customers who travel, doubling the roaming data allowance on several of its 5G postpaid plans. The move gives 5ica M subscribers 12 GB of roaming data, while 5ica L, 5ica XL and 5ica Premium customers now receive 16 GB each.

The operator’s own wording is simple and very consumer-friendly:

“Relax during your stay abroad and enjoy carefree internet use, because your tariff now has twice as many GB in roaming.”

In practical terms, that means the roaming benefit is no longer a small “just in case” add-on. For many city breaks, business trips or summer holidays, 12–16 GB can cover maps, messaging, ride-hailing, browsing, hotel check-ins and a fair amount of social media without forcing users to buy a separate roaming bundle.

MTS has also added more value lower down the portfolio. 5ica S now includes 100 GB of national data and 2 GB of roaming internet; Bit includes 60 GB of national data and 1 GB of roaming; and 5ica XS includes 5 GB of national traffic. The additional benefits also apply within 5ica tariffs inside Box4 and Super PLAN 4 packages.

Why this matters now

This is not just a tariff tweak. It is part of a bigger shift in how Balkan operators are packaging travel connectivity. Mts introduced its 5G network and 5ica postpaid tariffs in late 2025, positioning the new plans around faster speeds, lower latency and a more modern mobile experience. Adding stronger roaming allowances now makes that 5G story feel more complete, because customers do not stop expecting good connectivity the moment they cross the border.

There is another layer, too. Western Balkan users have already become used to the idea that roaming should be simpler and cheaper. The region’s Roam Like at Home model removed roaming costs within the Western Balkans from July 2021, while EU–Western Balkans data roaming prices have been gradually reduced since October 2023. In February 2026, the European Commission proposed opening negotiations to extend EU roaming rules to the Western Balkans. That direction of travel is clear: roaming is becoming less of a premium surcharge and more of a core product expectation.

The competitive pressure

MTS is not moving in isolation. A1 Serbia has been aggressive on roaming too, with postpaid offers that include roaming data for Europe and summer promotions doubling European roaming data until 31 October 2026. Yettel Serbia, meanwhile, keeps a more modular approach with Europe roaming add-ons such as 1 GB and 3 GB bundles, plus an Internet roaming tariff Unlimited 20 designed to protect users from excessive daily roaming charges.

This puts MTS somewhere in the middle: more integrated than a pure add-on strategy, but still structured around tariff tiers rather than a full “use it like home everywhere” promise. That is a sensible position for mainstream customers who want their operator plan to simply include enough travel data. It may be less ideal for heavy remote workers, long-stay travellers, or people moving across multiple non-European destinations, where a specialist travel eSIM or larger international bundle can still be cleaner and more predictable.

Conclusion

The real story here is not that Mts added more gigabytes. The real story is that roaming is slowly losing its old role as a fear-based revenue stream. Serbian operators now have to compete on how calm they can make travel feel.

For MTS, doubling allowances is a smart defensive and commercial move. It gives 5ica plans a stronger travel angle, helps justify premium tiers, and keeps customers inside the operator relationship at exactly the moment when travel eSIM brands are teaching people that connectivity can be bought in seconds. What could still be better is transparency: customers increasingly want clear country lists, partner-network rules, speed expectations and what happens after the allowance is used. The operators that explain that best will win trust, not just traffic. MTS has made the package stronger; now the opportunity is to make the roaming experience feel as simple as the headline.
