Lithuania Roaming Update: What Teledema Users Need to Know

Staying connected while abroad is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity. But navigating mobile roaming charges can feel like deciphering a secret code. Teledema is the only Lithuanian mobile operator cleared to apply roaming surcharges in the EU/EEA. The EU regulation allows surcharges for operators able to show ‘roam like home’ services are unprofitable for their business model.

Unveiling “Roam Like at Home”

Imagine using your phone seamlessly across Europe, with no surprise roaming bills. That’s the magic of “Roam Like at Home” (RLH), an EU regulation that eliminates roaming charges within the European Economic Area. This means calls, texts, and data used in countries like France, Germany, or Poland cost the same as in Lithuania!

But Wait, There’s More: The Case of Teledema

While most Lithuanian mobile operators have embraced RLH, there’s a slight twist for Teledema users. To maintain domestic price stability, Teledema has the option to apply a small additional charge specifically for data usage while roaming in the EU/EEA. This surcharge has recently increased from €0.82/GB to €0.90/GB, effective June 15, 2024.

“At the request of the mobile operator Teledema, we have evaluated the calculations provided by the international roaming service provider and re-established the maximum allowable additional charges for users of their services when traveling in the EU/EEA. Compared to last year, they increased from EUR 0,82/GB to EUR 0,90/GB,” says the RRT expert.

Don’t Panic! Here’s What it Means for You

Here’s the good news: Teledema can only implement this surcharge up to a specific limit set by the Communications Regulatory Authority (RRT). This means you’re still protected from exorbitant roaming fees. Additionally, Teledema has the discretion to choose whether or not to apply the surcharge at all.

A Breakdown of Potential Charges (Excluding VAT)

Let’s get down to specifics. Here’s a table outlining the potential additional charges Teledema could implement, compared to other major Lithuanian mobile operators:

Service           Bitė Lietuva                Tele2           Teledema          Telia Lietuva
Calls – Making Does not apply Does not apply €0.001/min         Does not apply
Calls – Answering Does not apply Does not apply €0.001/min Does not apply
SMS Does not apply Does not apply Does not apply Does not apply
Data Transfer Does not apply Does not apply Up to €0.90/GB Does not apply

The Bottom Line: Staying Connected on Your Travels

While Teledema users might face a slight additional data charge, it’s crucial to remember that this is a maximum limit. Teledema may choose not to apply it at all, and roaming charges for calls and texts remain eliminated under RLH regulations.

Here are some key takeaways:

  • Roaming within the EU/EEA is generally free for calls, texts, and data under “Roam Like at Home” regulations.
  • Teledema users may encounter a small additional charge for data roaming (up to €0.90/GB).
  • This surcharge is optional and capped by the Communications Regulatory Authority.
