LG Uplus ixi-O Roaming Call Goes Global From Japan

For all the progress in travel connectivity, one habit has barely changed: many people still hesitate before making a normal phone call abroad. Data roaming is easier, eSIMs have made app access simpler, and messaging apps cover most casual conversations. But when a traveler needs to call a parent, bank, hotel, colleague or customer, the old question returns: what will this cost?

LG Uplus is trying to remove that hesitation with ixi-O Roaming Call, a new overseas calling service launched first in Japan for users of its AI calling app, ixi-O. The service lets eligible U+ roaming customers, or users connected through Wi-Fi, make voice calls to Korea without separate international call charges. LG Uplus plans to expand it in the second half of 2026 to around 100 countries, including Southeast Asia, China and Europe.

Why Japan first makes sense

Japan is a logical first market: short-haul, high-frequency and busy with both leisure and business demand. Travelers may use mobile data all day, but still need a reliable voice channel for hotel issues, restaurant bookings, family calls, corporate check-ins or urgent banking support.

LG Uplus said the idea came from customer research among people who had used roaming services in the past year. The feedback was revealing: customers said things like, “I rarely use regular calls because I worry the fees will be expensive” and “I wish I could make calls right away, just like in Korea, without any separate setup.” That is the real pain point. Not only price, but uncertainty.

That makes ixi-O Roaming Call more interesting than a standard roaming perk. It is an attempt to make the call button feel normal again.

The AI layer matters

ixi-O is not just a roaming add-on. It is part of LG Uplus’ wider push into AI-powered calling, where the phone call becomes smarter, safer and more useful. That includes features such as call recording, summarization, real-time transcription and voice-phishing protection — services that become especially relevant when people are abroad and may need to handle urgent family, banking or business calls.

Call quality will still depend on the local network, Wi-Fi conditions and the roaming environment in each country. LG Uplus says it worked with overseas carriers in advance to check call quality before the wider rollout.

“ixi-O Roaming Call is a service designed so that customers can continue the calling experience they use in Korea even while abroad,” said Choi Yoon-ho, head of LG Uplus’s AI Business Group. “We will continue to advance AI-based calling services, including the roaming environment, so that customers can make calls without burden and use services safely anywhere, at home or abroad.”

That quote is important because it shows the real positioning: LG Uplus is not selling this only as “free calls.” It is positioning ixi-O Roaming Call as part of a bigger AI-calling experience that follows the user outside Korea.

How it compares

Globally, Wi-Fi calling already solves part of this problem. Verizon says Wi-Fi calls back to the US are free, while calls to other countries may be billed according to the customer’s international long-distance plan. T-Mobile also explains that calls to domestic numbers over Wi-Fi may have no fees on eligible plans, but warns that dropped Wi-Fi connections can switch calls to cellular networks and create unexpected charges.

That is the gap LG Uplus is targeting: not just enabling a call, but reducing anxiety around how it is routed and billed. For Korean U+ customers calling Korea from abroad, ixi-O Roaming Call could be simpler than Wi-Fi calling settings, app-to-app limitations or international voice-rate tables.

It will not be for everyone. Travelers who already live inside KakaoTalk, WhatsApp, FaceTime or Teams may not change behavior overnight. Heavy international callers who need to call non-Korean numbers may still need a different solution. And for visitors using independent travel eSIMs, this is not a replacement for global data connectivity. It is a home-operator loyalty feature layered on top of roaming.

What to watch next

The real test comes after Japan. Expanding to 100 countries sounds impressive, but execution will decide whether this becomes a sticky travel feature or another roaming promotion. LG Uplus’ own notice describes the initial Japan service as a launch promotion for data-roaming-plan customers, running from May 26 to November 10, 2026, so the long-term commercial model is worth watching.

The best version of this service would be transparent inside the app: where it works, what calls are included, when Wi-Fi is being used, when roaming data is being used, and whether any charge risk exists. Travelers do not need more telecom fine print. They need a clear green light.

LG Uplus ixi-O Roaming Call – Final thoughts

LG Uplus is reading the market correctly. Travel connectivity has moved beyond “Can I get data abroad?” The more valuable question is now: “Can I use my phone abroad without thinking too much?”

That is exactly where operators have a chance to stay relevant in the eSIM era. Independent eSIM providers are winning attention with flexible data. Messaging apps own much of casual communication. But home operators still have one powerful advantage: the trusted phone number, the billing relationship and the ability to make core services feel familiar overseas.

ixi-O Roaming Call is not a revolution by itself. But it is a smart signal. The next roaming battle will not only be about cheaper megabytes. It will be about removing small moments of friction — the call you almost did not make, the fee you were afraid of, the setting you did not understand. In that sense, LG Uplus is not just launching a roaming call feature. It is trying to make roaming feel less like roaming.
