Now, let’s face it, ordinary people hardly know the difference between an icon of an iron with one, two, or three dots on it, so you have to resort to tables of meanings or … to an app. Yes, there is an app for this: Laundry Snap is an app with which you take a photo of the clothing label and interpret what it means.

The LaundrySnap app defines itself as an application that uses machine learning to identify clothing labels. In practice, it is basically a recognition system that looks for known icons on clothing labels and shows you what they mean.

The application helps you not to damage your clothes in two ways: on the one hand, it has a guide in that tells you the meaning of each symbol. The guide, being ordered by categories (wash, bleach, drying, iron, and dry cleaning), makes it easy to find the icon that interests you quickly.

The other way is by using the mobile camera to analyze the tag. First, a photo is taken, and after a while, the application will identify which symbols it has found and their meaning. The degree of confidence that the app has that it has correctly identified the icon is indicated.

As in other similar applications, the result depends a lot on the quality of the photo and how clear the symbols look; the more perfect the photo, the better the results. In our tests, the app correctly identified some of the symbols and ignored others. Considering that it is the first version, it is foreseeable that it will improve over time.
