The merger between Wind and 3 left room for the arrival of the French Iliad, who announced his offers in Milan. The company will spend more than one billion euros or $1.15 billion in Italy in the coming years to build its own infrastructure and market its services. Iliad Italia
Iliad, founded by Xavier Niel, in France is the company that with the Free brand has revolutionized the market contributing to significantly lower rates with very aggressive prices, generous offers for minutes, gigabytes and text messages and the promise of not having hidden costs.
The company’s CEO Benedetto Levi announced the offer at a press conference in Milan, claiming that it’s five times cheaper than rival offers and adding that it will be limited to the first 1 million customers who sign up to Iliad.
The plan also includes unlimited calls to over 60 international destinations plus 2GB of EU data roaming.
SIM cards cost EUR 9.99 and can be acquired at the 100-plus Iliad Stores and Corners distributed throughout the country. The operator is also introducing automatic SIM card distribution machines called ‘Simbox’ at its shops.
In the Italy, the launch was preceded by a social campaign #RivoluzioneIliad: lower costs but above all clearer costs and without “tricks”.
“Fixed rate bids are traps full of unsolicited services and extra costs,” Benedetto Levi, CEO of Iliad Italia, said from the Milan stage. “Users are fed up with the lack of clarity in the industry. There are those who have done the accounts: to verify exhaustively all the rates available in Italy and understand which is the most convenient would need 25 hours of study. The case of the “28-day month” did school and obviously was widely cited by Levi. “We want to show that things can be done differently. Including the elimination of discrimination between new customers and old customers, who suffer from the notorious ‘tariff changes.
Iliad expects to reach break-even in Italy at the core earnings level with a market share of less than 10 percent.
