Hyperloop coming to Abu Dhabi?

Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HyperloopTT), a U.S. company, is bringing its low-pressure tube-based transport system to Abu Dhabi in the UAE in late 2019, according to a report from Reuters.

Hyperloops use magnets to levitate pods inside an airless tube, creating conditions in which the pods can shuttle people and freight at speeds of up to 750 miles (1,200 km) per hour.

“Passengers and goods will travel in pressurized capsules floating on a frictionless magnetic cushion within the tubes,” the website said. “Capsules are powered by a linear induction motor, electromagnetic propulsion, and embedded rechargeable batteries. As a result, the system is silent and emission-free.”

The technology, which has not been used commercially, is proposed as a replacement to existing rail infrastructure.

Hyperloop technology

There are currently several companies working to bring hyperloop technology to public use, including Virgin Hyperloop, Hyperloop Transportation Technologies (HyperloopTT), and TransPod.

Neighboring Dubai is backing rival Virgin Hyperloop One to build the futuristic transport system. The firm is working on building an office in Dubai and hopes to offer Hyperloop transport between Dubai and Abu Dhabi in just 12 minutes. Virgin Hyperloop One was previously headed by Richard Branson.

Virgin Hyperloop One has conducted successful test runs with passengers on board and has received regulatory approval to conduct further testing in the United States. HyperloopTT has completed a full-scale prototype and has signed agreements with several countries to develop hyperloop systems. TransPod is also developing a full-scale prototype and has partnered with several industry leaders to support its development.

HyperloopTT is one of the leading companies in the development of hyperloop technology and has made significant progress in advancing the technology and bringing it closer to commercialization. However, the company and the wider hyperloop industry still face a number of challenges, including regulatory approval, funding, and technological development.
