How World Cup 2026 Tested 5G, Wi-Fi and eSIM Networks

The 2026 FIFA World Cup did more than fill stadiums across the United States, Canada and Mexico. It turned an entire continent into a live stress test for mobile networks, Wi-Fi systems, public-safety communications and the digital services now woven into almost every part of a fan’s journey. A GSMA Intelligence report released in June, World Cup 2026: Are Operators the Game-Changers?, argued before the tournament ended that operators would need to combine infrastructure performance, customer experience and service innovation. Post-tournament figures from US operators now lend that argument considerable weight.

The stadium was only one part of the test

For modern fans, connectivity begins long before kickoff. It is needed to activate tickets, navigate airports, find public transport, access accommodation, communicate across languages, order rides, share content and receive real-time event information.

Behind the scenes, the stakes are higher. Networks support broadcasters, refereeing systems, venue operations, emergency services and security teams. GSMA Intelligence highlights additional 5G and Wi-Fi capacity, 5G Standalone, private networks, edge computing, and IoT as technologies that are increasingly important to major sporting events.

This matters because simply adding more capacity inside a stadium is no longer enough. A fan may have excellent service in their seat and still lose connectivity at the airport, on a crowded train platform or outside a fan zone precisely when they need a ticket, map or payment app.

AT&T said it prepared all 11 US host cities for traffic levels two to three times above normal, supporting 146 locations including stadiums, airports, fan festivals and team base camps. It reported roughly one petabyte of traffic across host cities while maintaining more than 99% voice and data reliability.

Verizon, the tournament’s official telecommunications services sponsor, reported nearly 500 TB of data across US match stadiums. The final alone generated 29.2 TB, while upload traffic rose by almost 70% during the half-time show as fans simultaneously shared photos and video.

That upload surge may be more revealing than the headline total. Networks were traditionally designed around people consuming content. Major events increasingly turn tens of thousands of spectators into broadcasters at the same moment.

The commercial opportunity moved beyond data

GSMA Intelligence also identifies several ways operators can turn major events into more than temporary capacity projects:

  • Travel eSIMs: Its 2025 Global Consumer Survey found that 12% of recent international travellers had used an eSIM abroad, and more than 70% of those users chose a travel eSIM.
  • Experience-based tariffs: Some 45% of mobile contract customers expressed interest in plans built around network performance rather than simply data volume.
  • Network-native services: T-Mobile US’s Live Translation shows how operators can embed useful services directly into the network, removing the need for a separate app or specialist device hardware.

These models will not suit everyone. A traveller whose domestic plan already includes affordable roaming may have little reason to buy another eSIM, while a premium performance tariff could be difficult to justify outside congested events. Stadium Wi-Fi, local prepaid plans and specialist travel eSIM providers remain practical alternatives, particularly when price, multi-country coverage or flexibility matters more than priority access.

Operators also need to explain these offers better. “Premium connectivity” is not meaningful unless customers know what is prioritised, where it works, whether hotspot use is included and what happens outside the venue.

That means permanent fibre, upgraded transport corridors, resilient airport coverage, venue-neutral infrastructure and stronger public-safety communications—not a collection of temporary cells removed after the final.

The real winner is the network nobody notices

Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile approached the tournament from different positions: sponsorship and large-scale stadium capacity, nationwide venue and public-safety support, and network-native services such as translation. Pre-tournament Opensignal analysis also showed that leadership varied by city and metric rather than belonging cleanly to one operator.

Cloudflare’s post-tournament analysis similarly found that match schedules and breaks visibly reshaped internet traffic across multiple countries, underlining that a World Cup is no longer only a venue-network event. It is a global digital-traffic event.

The broader trend is clear. Operators are no longer competing only on download speed or coverage maps. They are competing on resilience, upload performance, priority access, embedded intelligence and the ability to keep an entire journey working under extreme demand.

For future hosts, the best network investment will not be the one producing the largest tournament-day statistic. It will be the infrastructure that fans barely notice, critical services can trust and cities continue using long after the crowds have gone home.
