HONOR Magic9 Pro Max Combines ARRI and Dual eSIM/SIM

HONOR has launched the Magic9 Pro Max in China. The obvious headline is its camera partnership with ARRI.

However, another detail may be just as interesting for frequent travellers and business users. The phone combines two physical nano-SIM slots with support for up to two stored eSIM numbers.

That does not mean four lines are live simultaneously. HONOR’s Chinese specifications confirm two physical SIM slots and up to two stored eSIM numbers. Meanwhile, HONOR community material says two numbers can remain in standby at once.

Therefore, what HONOR is really offering is flexible switching between physical SIM and eSIM identities.

It also arrives at an interesting moment. Apple’s iPhone Air is eSIM-only. By contrast, Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra still supports physical SIM and eSIM combinations, including dual eSIM.

HONOR is therefore not simply following the industry toward a tray-free future. Instead, it is keeping both models alive in the same flagship.

ARRI Moves Deeper Into Mobile

HONOR is positioning the Magic9 Pro Max as a “handheld cinema system.” Its end-to-end workflow was co-engineered with ARRI.

That, however, is more substantial than the familiar smartphone camera badge.

The phone supports ARRI LogC3, ARRI Wide Gamut 3 and 10-bit capture. In addition, it offers real-time ARRI Looks and access to the ARRI Look Library.

ARRI says selected elements of its Image Science are integrated across capture, colour management, preview and finishing.

That matters because smartphone imaging partnerships have often focused on tuning or visual style. HONOR and ARRI, however, are pushing further into workflow.

Creators can shoot flatter LogC3 footage and preserve more grading latitude. Moreover, they can move material into a more recognisable post-production environment.

ARRI describes Log C as a scene-based encoding designed to carry image information through colour grading. In other words, it is not intended to create a finished-looking image straight from the camera.

“The HONOR Magic Series was born for creation, using technology to nurture and empower the creativity within each of us,” said James Li, CEO of HONOR. “With HONOR Magic9 Pro Max, HONOR AI helps turn inspiration into action, supporting creators from ideation and scriptwriting through to editing. Through our Cinematic Imaging Partnership with ARRI, we are integrating the HONOR AIMAGE engine with ARRI’s century of cinematic expertise, helping everyone become the director of their own life.”

Dual 200MP Cameras and Creator Hardware

The rear system pairs a 200MP main camera with a 200MP telephoto. Both feature optical stabilisation.

Meanwhile, a 50MP ultra-wide camera completes the main rear setup.

HONOR also adds its Imaging Chip H1 for real-time RAW-domain AI noise reduction. According to the company, the system delivers up to 14 stops of cinematic dynamic range under its test conditions.

ARRI CINEMA Mode records up to 4K 60fps. In addition, the phone includes a four-microphone directional recording system.

Manual controls and an optional SmallRig kit extend the setup further. Together, these features make the phone feel closer to a modular creator tool.

There is also a 55MP square-format front camera. As a result, creators have more flexibility when cropping between vertical and horizontal formats.

That is, ultimately, a practical nod to how content is actually published today.

Big Battery, New Snapdragon

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 powers the device.

It is backed by an 8,800mAh silicon-carbon battery. Meanwhile, charging reaches 100W wired and 80W wireless.

Qualcomm unveiled the platform on September 22 as part of its latest premium chipset generation. HONOR, in turn, is among the first manufacturers adopting it.

The 6.8-inch LTPO OLED display offers claimed peak brightness of 10,000 nits in specific conditions. At the same time, reflectance can fall as low as 1.5%.

IP68, IP69 and IP69K ratings add protection against dust and water. Furthermore, MagicOS 11 is based on Android 17.

For creators travelling with one device, the combination is compelling. It brings together a large battery, flexible connectivity and serious capture tools.

Just as importantly, it delivers the flagship processing needed to support them.

Why the eSIM/SIM Setup Matters

For Alertify readers, the SIM architecture reflects a wider market split. Apple, for example, is extending eSIM-only hardware to more markets.

Google’s Pixel 11 Pro in the US can run two active eSIMs. It can also store eight or more profiles.

UK and European versions, however, retain a physical SIM plus eSIM. Samsung and Xiaomi also offer flexible dual-SIM combinations.

HONOR takes another route. Instead, it preserves two nano-SIM slots while adding eSIM storage.

That can be useful for travellers moving between very different mobile markets. For example, some destinations have strong eSIM adoption. Others still make local prepaid physical SIMs easier to buy.

The caveat, however, is important. Global implementation is not yet clear. HONOR says eSIM availability depends on market and carrier support. In addition, international rollout details remain pending.

For a travel-focused buyer, therefore, that matters more than the theoretical number of stored profiles.

Price and Availability

The HONOR Magic9 Pro Max went on sale in China on September 28. It is available in Shadow Black, Glacier Silver and Moss Green. Meanwhile, configurations range from 12GB/256GB to 16GB/1TB.

The official Chinese starting price converts to approximately €855 at the September 29 exchange rate. HONOR says launches across Europe, the Middle East and Africa, Southeast Asia and other markets will be announced separately. This is not the obvious choice for someone wanting a compact phone. Likewise, it is not aimed at buyers who only want simple point-and-shoot photography.

A fully established global eSIM experience is another area where buyers may want to wait for regional details.

Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra, Google’s Pixel 11 Pro and Xiaomi’s 17 Ultra are credible alternatives. However, the best fit depends on priorities such as software, camera consistency and eSIM profile handling. Regional availability matters too.

Ultimately, their official specifications show different approaches to physical SIM and eSIM combinations. There is still no single industry-wide standard.

Final Thoughts

The Magic9 Pro Max matters because HONOR is combining two smartphone trends that are usually discussed separately.

On one side is the professionalisation of mobile content creation. On the other is the fragmentation of SIM strategy.

ARRI gives the first trend real credibility. The second, however, is more subtle. The industry is not moving toward one eSIM endpoint at the same speed everywhere.

Apple is removing the tray. Meanwhile, Google is leaning heavily into multi-profile eSIM in some markets. Samsung and Xiaomi, by contrast, retain hybrid flexibility. HONOR is therefore betting that premium users still value optionality. For now, that may be the more practical travel-phone proposition.

Four stored identities are not revolutionary by themselves. Instead, the more important point is the ability to move between physical SIM and eSIM worlds.

Ultimately, that reflects how global connectivity actually works in 2026. It remains uneven, market by market and operator by operator.
