Globe Starlink Brings Satellite Mobile to Philippines
The Philippines is almost a perfect stress test for mobile networks: more than 7,000 islands, difficult terrain, remote coastal communities and a long history of typhoons, earthquakes and power outages that can knock infrastructure offline at exactly the wrong moment. That is why Globe’s commercial launch of Starlink satellite-to-mobile service matters beyond the usual “new network feature” headline.
Globe says it has become the first operator in the Philippines to receive National Telecommunications Commission approval to commercially offer direct-to-device satellite connectivity nationwide. The service uses Starlink’s low-Earth orbit satellites as a kind of “cell tower in space,” allowing standard LTE smartphones to connect when Globe’s terrestrial signal is unavailable, provided the user has a clear view of the sky. It supports SMS, essential messaging, navigation and app-based voice and video calling. It is not full broadband. It is a fallback layer for reachability.

A safety layer, not a shiny extra
Satellite-to-mobile is often discussed like the next consumer telecom battleground. In the Philippines, its first value is more practical: resilience. When towers are down, fiber backhaul is damaged or power is out, the priority is not streaming. It is sending a message, finding a route, checking on family, calling through WhatsApp or Viber, and receiving emergency updates.
Globe had a live proof point before the commercial launch. After the magnitude 7.8 earthquake affecting South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani, Globe deployed the Starlink satellite-to-mobile service for disaster response under NTC demo approval. Its initial deployment release said more than 700,000 Globe and TM customers stood to benefit, while the later commercial launch announcement said the service had benefited more than 150,000 customers in the hardest-hit areas. Different stages, same message: the technology becomes most convincing when ordinary infrastructure is under pressure.
For remote communities, it also changes the coverage conversation. Operators have spent decades trying to justify tower economics where geography and population density make rollout difficult. Satellite-to-mobile does not remove the need for towers, fiber or power systems. But it can soften the harshest edge of the coverage gap.
How Globe Starlink works
Globe says customers need an active Globe SIM subscribed to a Globe Starlink promo, with prepaid and TM access starting at ₱99. Globe Platinum and eligible postpaid users on plans ₱1,499 and above get access at no additional charge. A compatible LTE device is required, and support depends on manufacturer, model and software version. iOS support is not yet available, a real limitation for a service that wants to feel universal.

Users need to be outdoors or have a clear view of the sky. On dual-SIM devices, the Globe SIM should be set as the default for data and texts. Some Android devices may require data roaming to be switched on, though Globe says this does not create extra roaming fees inside the Philippines.
That makes Globe Starlink useful, but not magical. Heavy data users, urban customers with strong 5G, and people expecting satellite broadband speeds on a phone will probably be underwhelmed. For a fisher, field worker, rural family, hiker, driver, local official or disaster responder, however, “underwhelming” is not the point. Reachability is.
The wider market is moving fast
Globe is not moving in isolation. Starlink has been building operator partnerships for direct-to-cell services globally, while the broader satellite-to-device market is filling with different models. Vodafone and AST SpaceMobile launched Satellite Connect Europe as a direct-to-device venture designed to help European operators extend coverage while keeping control of customer relationships and data. Industry tracking cited by Light Reading and GSA shows operators across many countries are now investing in satellite D2D technology, while 3GPP non-terrestrial network standards continue to evolve.

There is still a strategic split. Starlink’s model is moving quickly by using existing mobile spectrum and ordinary LTE phones. AST SpaceMobile is positioning around operator-led broadband direct-to-device. Skylo and other NTN players are taking a more standards-based route. The likely future is hybrid: terrestrial 4G/5G for normal capacity, satellite-to-mobile for gaps and emergencies, and standards-based NTN for deeper 5G/6G integration.
Conclusion
Globe’s Starlink launch should not be read as the end of the cell tower. It is closer to the beginning of a more honest coverage model. For years, operators sold “nationwide coverage” while users in islands, mountains, roads and disaster zones knew the map had exceptions. Satellite-to-mobile gives operators a way to admit those exceptions and design around them.
The strongest part of Globe’s move is its realism: limited services, compatible devices, clear-sky requirement and disaster value. The weakest part, for now, is also realism: no iOS support yet, limited app experience, and some user education still needed.
The future of mobile coverage is layered connectivity. Globe and Starlink are early in the Philippines, Vodafone and AST are building a European operator-led alternative, and NTN players are preparing the longer game. The winners will make connectivity work when the map, the weather and the infrastructure all fail at once.
