German regulator: 5G has 53% geographic coverage

More than half of Germany has 5G coverage from at least one supplier, says the regulator Bundesnetzagentur, but Telekom Deutschland will soon be able to connect to 90% of the population. germany 5g coverage

According to data from the Federal Network Agency, by the end of October 2021, over 53 percent of the area will be covered by at least one provider with the latest 5G mobile communications standard.

The radio frequencies at 3.6 GHz, which were auctioned off in 2019 and used exclusively for 5G, will initially be used by all network operators in urban areas. Particularly high data rates are therefore initially only achieved in metropolitan areas.

In order to still achieve a high area coverage with 5G, the network operators Telekom and Vodafone in particular use so-called Dynamic Spectrum Sharing – DSS for short – in parallel. The existing 4G infrastructure is also used for 5G and the cellular spectrum is split between the two technologies as required.

4G and 3G coverage germany 5g coverage

With the currently dominant 4G ( LTE ) cellular standard , around 96 percent of the area is currently covered by at least one cellular network operator.

The shutdown of 3G technology, which began at the beginning of the year, is almost complete. At the end of October 2021, around 13.3 percent of the area was still covered by 3G . Telekom and Vodafone switched off their 3G networks completely in the summer. Telefónica is expected to have completed this step by the end of the year. The frequencies freed up as a result are used for the more powerful 4G and 5G networks.

The shutdown of the 3G network did not have a negative impact on the supply situation. The area share of white and gray spots is declining and amounts to approx. 3.9 percent for white and approx. 6.8 percent for gray spots. White spots are areas where mobile broadband is not available. Only one network operator offers mobile broadband in gray areas. The area of dead spots without any mobile phone coverage has also decreased slightly and is 0.36 percent.

Mobile network monitoring by the Federal Network Agency

The Federal Network Agency collects supply data from network operators for mobile communications monitoring and compares and plausibility checks this information with the results of the users of the radio hole app and the data from the in-house test and measurement service.

In accordance with the provisions of the mobile communications strategy, the Federal Network Agency carries out a systematic and provider-specific monitoring of the supply of mobile communications.  germany 5g coverage
