Analyst firm Gartner has released a new Magic Quadrant on enterprise high productivity application platform as a service (hpaPaaS), and found Mendix, OutSystems and Salesforce at the top of the tree.
Gartner definition of acronym : hpaPaaS provides rapid application development features for development, deployment and execution – in the cloud.
With that out of the way, it’s worth examining the runners and riders and the conditions for entry. Vendors needed to have at least one platform which is a cloud service, be enterprise-grade – for instance, the provider taking some responsibility for high availability and disaster recovery – have more than 200 organisations as paying customers and generating an estimated revenue of at least $4 million.
Mendix was cited as having the highest score in completeness of vision, while Salesforce was significantly in front in terms of ability to execute. This is perhaps not a huge surprise given the latter’s size, with the report noting their ‘well established presence’ and revenue, as well as being a ‘pioneer of cloud computing’. Yet in comparison, Forrester’s Wave report last month on mobile low-code development platforms featured the same three leaders, alongside Kony. Gartner puts Kony at the very edge of the ‘challengers’ box in its analysis.
“Gartner’s definition of enterprise-class high productivity aPaaS is spot on,” said Paulo Rosado, CEO of OutSystems in a statement. “IT organisations are demanding faster digital solutions that address multiple use cases, are easy to use, and have broad functional depth.
“Gartner’s definition of enterprise-class high productivity aPaaS is spot on,” said Paulo Rosado, CEO of OutSystems. “IT organizations are demanding faster digital solutions that address multiple use cases, are easy to use, and have broad functional depth. We believe the introduction of a High-Productivity Magic Quadrant is proof that thousands of enterprise customers are experiencing tangible value from low-code development solutions, and we are thrilled to be considered a Leader in this emerging category.”
The OutSystems high-productivity aPaaS is a general-purpose solution that addresses many PaaS use cases including the development of mobile front-end applications, enterprise core systems, and omnichannel business applications. OutSystems provides clients a low-risk way to get started, immediately cutting app backlog with tremendous development speed. Going forward, OutSystems customers have a future-proof platform for end-to-end application lifecycle management, architecture, and governance as they grow their digital portfolio.
“Home to more than 5.5 million apps, the Salesforce Platform is helping businesses reinvent themselves and connect with their customers in a whole new way,” said John Wookey, EVP of Platform at Salesforce. “With new Einstein features empowering developers of all skill levels to build AI-powered apps, App Cloud ranks among the most complete development platforms in the world for both citizen and professional developers.”
Gartner’s Magic Quadrants are based on rigorous analysis, backed up by highly structured methodologies. According to Gartner, “In the enterprise hpaPaaS market, leadership implies an understanding of the demands of the enterprise and the opportunities of cloud computing, and a genuine commitment to enterprise cloud computing. A Leader must have demonstrated a market-leading vision and the ability to deliver on that vision. It must provide the set of services required by the enterprise in a public cloud offering, yet enable use by non-3GL developers. In this developing market, only three vendors have sustained excellence in both execution and vision for long enough to demonstrate effective leadership, but with growing strategic levels of investment we expect multiple vendors to advance in this direction during the next three years.”
